Facebook Launches 0.Facebook.com -The Free Mobile Access Site

Facebook have announced that they will be creating a new zero version of their social networking site. Named 0.facebook.com, the zero service will give users a stripped down, text-only version of the social site, which will mean that the user will not incur any data charges from it’s carrier.

Now, the service won’t obviously allow you to view rich content but it will enable you to read your friends status and commenting free of charge.

The service will be rolled out primarily in emerging markets, but other markets will include Belguim, Denmark and Finland. 3 in the UK and Telstra in Australia are also going to be joining soon.

It does seem like a positive move especially as certain mobile phone carriers, such as Vodafone will be scrapping it’s ‘fair use’ policy, and charge customers if they go over their download limits. However, it still remains to be seen how well received this will amongst many of the Facebook fans who rely on rich content on the site.

Do you think you will use the zero version of Facebook or do you rely on Facebook’s rich content to feed your Facebook addiction? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
