Android App: Google Goggles Now Includes Text Translate

Google Goggles, the Android application from Google has been updated with an a new feature which includes text translation.

The new text translation feature will work by taking a photo of a piece of text you want to translate with your Android phone camera and the smart application will then translate the text for you in English.

With holiday season just around the corner, this definitely proves to be a very useful application to translate signs, menus and other documents whilst abroad. I know I could have found this very useful in Paris last year as I even struggled to get a ticket for the underground as everything was in French.

Currently, the service offers translation in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish but no doubt Google will be working hard to increase the number of languages which will support the application.

At present Google Goggles application with text translation is only available on Android phones, but there is a hope that this smart and very useful app could be rolled out onto other applications. If I owned an Android phone, I think this would definitely be on my must have list of applications to download.

Although, this application seen like a good idea, no doubt many believe that applications such as these just make us lazy to learn another language. What do you think? Does this make us lazy or can you find this application opening up language barriers? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
