Opera Browser iPhone App Gets Over 1 Million Downloads

On its first day in the Apple App Store, Opera Mini has become the most popular free download with over a million people getting their hands on the browser.

Opera Mini provides an alternative to Safari, and its popularity suggests that iPhone users have been waiting for another big-name web browsing option for some time.

Opera Mini does come with features that Safari lacks. When performing a search, Opera Mini will automatically highlight search terms on a results page- in Safari, you still nee to perform a manual find.

You can also open up to 10 tabs on Opera Mini, and it will even support Flash video which again, isn't possible on Safari.

Opera Mini is also notably faster than its Apple counterpart.

This is thanks to the app utilising servers positioned between the web page and your iPhone. This server renders high bandwidth sites into a lower bandwidth page for your handset, reducing the impact on your iPhone's processor.

Initial browser previews said that Opera Mini provided up to six times the speed of Safari, particularly on congested networks.

"Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the web on the iPhone – especially during heavy web traffic," said Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software.

"With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users."

Apple took three weeks to approve the Opera Mini app, which has already been developed for a range of other mobile platforms.

Opera is providing its Mini app free on the iPhone, as it plans to generate income from search deals.
