O2 Offers Unlimited Calls, SMS and Data Through GiffGaff

It may sound like Boris Johnson's version of ping pong, but mobile operator GiffGaff is set to turn the tables for mobile customers, releasing its competitive packages including unlimited calls, texts and data downloads.

Hailed as the "people powered" operator, the small start-up company is powered by the O2 network, and is even staffed by ex-O2 employees.

To get your phone onto a completely unlimited plan, you'll need to join GiffGaff's top "goodybag" package setting you back £35.

In this case unlimited actually means unlimited, provided the phone is for personal use and is not tethered to a computer.

If you're looking to save your pennies, goodybags start at £5 for an unlimited text bundle, which lasts for 30 days.

For £10, you get unlimited texts, 100 minutes of talk time and internet access, or if you're a bit of a chatterbox, you can pay £15 to up the talk time to 300 minutes, again both expire after 30 days.

Calls are free to other GiffGaff users and calls to other mobiles and land lines are charged at a very reasonable 8p per minute. You will have to fork out to listen to voicemail though.

GiffGaff has focused on providing pay-and-go SIM cards only, so you're not married to a 24 month contract.

The company has also distanced itself from selling mobile phones, instead concentrating on "involving" its customers in its bundle prices.

The more customers are involved with GiffGaff such as by promoting the service or answering questions from the community, the more they will be rewarded with cheaper calls and texts.

"Our growing community of GiffGaffers have ultimately engineered the goodybags so we know they'll be well received," said Mike Fairman, CEO of GiffGaff.

"Increasing numbers of consumers demand to be more involved, engaged and interactive with brands and we've been built to respond to this."

GiffGaff is currently the only UK network providing free calls to 0800 numbers, which is something O2 recently ceased doing.

To power-up your handset with GiffGaff, you can order a free SIM from the GiffGaff site.

  • It’s good to see new companies entering a market dominated by the big players and actually competing. I hate the fact you have to sign a 24 month contract to get good deals with most companies these days. Well done giff gaff. Innovative new products such as this are what spurn the economy to do better.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
