Dog DNA Test Kit: What Breed is Your Dog?

A gadget – well, more of a test kit really – for the dog owners this one. Do you own a Labradoodle, a Cockapoo, or just a common garden Mutt? Well, if you’ve ever wondered what canine attributes make up your puppy’s personality, now you can find out.

American company Wisdom Panel Insights have recently released their dog DNA test kit in Britain. You swab your dog’s cheek (which I’m sure is much harder than it sounds!) and then send the test off to the company. In three weeks, you’ll know exactly what breed your pet is.

It’s not just about being able to come up with a funny breed name for your half Spaniel, quarter Labrador, one eight West Highland Terrier and one eighth Great Dane chum (wow imagine that dog – name suggestions in the comments please). Knowing the genetic make up of Rover means you can come a little closer to understanding why he barks all the time, or why such a tiny mongrel eats so much puppy chow. Your results point out the ancestral traits passed down, and then you can set about training out the bad stuff and rewarding the good stuff in a way your dog will respond positively to.

It does cost you £60 for the privilege though. But if you’re having problems with training, or you’re just really REALLY curious about where that curly tail came from, then it could be worth the expense.

  • ROFL, this is yet another one of those gadgets most probably the wealthy middle class would be using.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
