Sony PS3 Firmware Update 3.21 Will Not Include “Install Other OS” Feature

Sony has announced that older PlayStation 3 consoles will be losing one of their features after a PS3 firmware update goes live this Thursday.

Sony will be launching their latest firmware update called PS3 firmware 3.21 this week which will not include the feature that allows the ability to "Install Other OS".

As a result of this news, Sony may leave a few Linux users disgruntled about the prospect that the console will not allow them to play back Blu-ray or software titles which need 3.21 or later, however Sony's justification to the removing of this feature is due to the security concerns.

What do you think of Sony disabling this feature in their new firmware update? Are you one of the people affected by Sony's move? Please leave a comment and let us know what you think…

  • This doesn’t affect me as I don’t have linux installed on my ps3 but why would SONY just leave out this feature and forget it altogher? It’s a good feature to have. Oh well…

  • I really am NOT happy about this.

In the UK, at least, goods should be fit for the purpose advertised. I bought my original PS3 with the thought of running Linux, plays PS2 and PS3 games, using te touted features of the PlayStation Network.

Now the unit is being crippled.

Despite Sony saying, when they launche the new slim model without the OtherOS feature, that they WOULD NOT remove this from the older fat models.

Sony, you have let us down. I’m not going to update my PS3 firmware – at least NOT yet; and there will definately be a complaint going to trading standards, after a phone call to Sony with a moan moan moan too.

  • What the hell, I use Yellow Dog Linux religiously on my PS3, its quick as hell, never once had a security issue, always been happy. So now i guess that not only will my system not be up to speed but i may miss out on further updates, I really don’t want to give this feature up, Sony, truly, for the first time, you really suck.

  • sony you suck for the fist time its true might as well go back to ms really disapointed
