iPhone/iPod Touch Gain a Foothold in the Portable Gaming Market

Apple having been hitting the news headlines again this time but it's not about the imminent release of the Apple iPad or the release of their rumoured iPhone 4G. No. It is all about their increasing foothold in the gaming market?

Now, most of you will be looking at this thinking, how and why especially as a fair few of us thought that the Apple iPhone or the iPod Touch wouldn't live up to the expectations of being a great gaming platform.

Well, I think we're all in for a big surprise as Flurry Analytics have reported that Apple have sold 19% of all portable game software in the US in 2009, which is rise from 2008's 5%. The rise means that the Apple is cutting into the share from Sony's PlayStation Portable and a smaller share from the Nintendo DS.

With the release of the Apple iPad shortly, featuring a larger screen and more processing power as well as the games on the tablet take a step closer to PC and console gaming, I wonder how this will affect the traditional gaming companies like Sony and Nintendo?
