It’s not just Nike (Niike), iPod (iPd) and Guess (Guess?) that are suffering from knock-off products pretending to be the real thing, the art of fake bling has now moved to the world’s largest search engine, Google. Or Goojje.
Google’s problems with China started a few months ago when the tech giant threatened to pull out of the country after a malicious attack on its Gmail service originated from China.
Now with Google’s popularity in China on the wane, copy cat search site Goojje, with an eerily similar page style to Google, has surfaced.
Google has sent a (strongly worded we’re sure) letter to the web operator of Goojje.com to ask the site to cease its Google-esque ways.
The name Goojje itself is a play on words with “jje” sounding like the Chinese word for “older sister”, while the “gle” syllable of “Google” is pronounced like the Chinese word for “older brother”. A lack of originality does not necessarily mean a lack of wit.
Goojje had even posted a message when it launched last month which read: “Sister was very happy when brother gave up the thought of leaving and stayed for sister.”
While Goojje has similar functionality, web design and logo to Google, there is one key difference between the two- Goojje censors all search results in compliance with Chinese law.
Google used to adhere to this practice until it said it would cease this self-censorship as a reaction against the last set of Chinese attacks.
