iPhone 4G Release Date Confirmed After Prototype Image Appears?

After the announcement of iPad, everyone has gone a little crazy about the news, specs and the potential shipping dates, however one thing which a lot of people were looking forward to was Apple also offering more details about the rumoured iPhone 4G.

With the iPad release overshadowing any other news in the gadget world, you might have forgotten the speculation surrounding the iPhone 4G. We know that it is rumoured to have an improved camera, OLED screen and even a touch sensitive case, however I am pretty sure if anyone owns a iPhone 3G, they maybe due for an upgrade shortly, but like me are deliberating on whether to wait for the iPhone 4G.

Now, we did discuss that the iPhone 4G could be released in sometime in mid 2010, and with this next photo showing a blurry cosmetic make up of the phone, we could in actual fact hear the release the iPhone 4G beckoning closer to the predicted release of summer 2010.

So what is this blurry picture we're talking about here? Engadget released a picture during the announcement of the Apple iPad but because the hype was all about the iPad, this is picture of what appears to be a prototype iPhone 4G had been floating around in the public domain unsuspected for over a week and it is only until now that AppleInsider revealed that this could actually be the prototype for the Apple next generation phone.

As this picture is quite hard to decipher, AppleInsider could only really comment on the aesthetics of this supposed iPhone 4G model.  It's a shame that the news wasn't a little more about the inside of the phone, but with just a blurry picture we'd be clutching at straws to think it could be anything else.

However, what is interesting is that if there is an iPhone 4G prototype on the loose then the summer release date doesn't look to far-fetched. However, I don't know whether this release date could be a good thing for Apple especially with the release of the iPad set for March/April time. Maybe this is why Apple are keeping tight lipped about the release date of the new iPhone 4G, as it means that Apple lovers could shun the iPad and instead wait a few more months to get their hands on the more powerful iPhone 4G?

Let us know what you think? Do you the release of the Apple iPhone 4G is set for a summer release or do you think the speculation is all wrong and Apple will wait for iPad to be gain a foothold in the market before it releases the iPhone 4G? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think?

I’m due for an upgrade now. I dont want to buy the 3GS version cos i’d get tied into a 2 year contract. The sooner they release the next versin of the iphone, the better. I will buy both an iPad and the latest iPhone.

  • I’m in the same boat, I’ve a 3G and don’t really want to get a 3GS if the 4th Gen is around the corner. Although there are a number of decent trade-in deals on the 3G on an 18 month deal which are tempting and will surly disappear once the 4th Gen is announced. Decision, Decisions

  • I expect Apple to have a big year this year. The iPad will be a huge success. I don’t care what anyone says about what it may be lacking and how it could be better. Apple created a market with this product. In many households iPads will replace a computer, because why would you need two high power computers if you can have one and the iPad, especially if all you use a computer for is music, videos, internet, and games? The iPad is not built for power users, even though I’m sure many will buy one. I think we can expect, that since Apple opened the door to all developers to make Apps for the iPad specifically, to see amazing applications that we never even could have imagined 10 years ago.

There is a reason they left out a few things from the iPad. Its the same reason they left out stuff in the older iPods, the iPhones, and even their macs. Apple is always ahead of the game these days. They know whats hot, they know what the people want, and they know how to make money. Every year since the iPod has come out, a new generation has come out. A new generation that is bigger, badder, and more powerful than the last. The case is also the same for the iPhone and Macs.

If trends are consistent, that would mean we can expect a new iPhone to be released in June/July, a new iPod touch in September, along with some kind of improvement to the macs in the second half of the year. I think Apple really knows what they’re doing with their products this year. They had a very strong year in 2009, their stock rising consistently through the year by $117 per share. Expect 2010 to be just as amazing. The iPad will be greatly anticipated because of how Apple is releasing it. Wi-fi models only for three months, and then 3g models come out.

This gives app developers another two and a half months to five months to make enough apps that run on the iPad for the iPad to be worth it. However, it already runs the 140,000 apps in the app store, so there is no disadvantage to buying one when they first come out. If you saw the keynote, you saw what the apple developers were apple to come up with along with other outside companies like EA Games. The content possibilities for the iPad are virtually infinite because next year Apple will come out with new hardware and software upgrades, giving developers more room to create applications. I wouldn’t be surprised in two years if Apple comes out with different size iPads as far as screen size.

What I’m really interested in is this new A4 chip. Nothing is really known about it yet aside form the fact that its in the iPad and its really really fast. I would imagine it would be a part of all mobile devices Apple develops over the next few years, and if its as fast and as capable as it looked on the keynote, it may see its way into their notebook line, or some form of it to replace the intel chips.

  • No way apple is going to produce a phone with a removable battery.

  • I’m thinking they will release the iPhone 4g in the summer, they seem to want to keep this trend of releasing iPhones in the summer. Howerver I do believe people will wait for an iPhone 4g rather than get an ipad. Why?who the hell wants an oversized iPhone if you’ve got one that fits I. Your pocket. Ipad will flop and not see the attention of iPhones and iPods and macs, it would be like having a pen but then buying a typewriter. Doesn’t make sense.

  • Brandon

I think they just need to give u a release date so I can get rid of Verizon and this BBStorm I have… there’s my 2 cents…

  • I will be waiting for the next iPhone, here is not enough of a difference between my iPhone 3g and the 3gs for me to take the risk of another phone being released just a couple of months later.

Regarding the iPad I will wait until I see one before shelling out any cash ;)

  • I am dying to get my hands on the i phone 3gs ive just found out that there is a 4g coming out i am now going to wait so please hurry up and realease it.

  • Nikolas

I hope this is fake! Looks pretty much same design (to not say even more thicker) then the previous 2 versions. I wan’t a bit different design this time, im tired of the old ones. Have 3G, the contract has finished months ago and waiting for the new iPhone. Of course i will buy both, iPhone 4 and iPad.

  • letosha walton

I am a sprint customer and want to leave them and get the lastest iphone 4g. Iv been wanted one for 2years.

  • Dashia

RELEASE THE PHONE OMG IM THINK I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH IT FROM THE PICTURE IM SO WAITING FOR IT TO COME OUT SO I CAN GET IT

  • Larry

Id get both. I’m due for a new phone and don’t want to sign a contract now knowing the 4g is coming sometime this year. Not sure why people would get a iphone over the decision on a ipad. Two completly different products. The i-pad is a netbook, not a phone.

  • I think the iPad and iPhone compete in fundamentally different markets. Try as it might the iPhone doesn’t a computer make. The iPad can realistically compete in the netbook segment as it provides keyboard support.

  • I hope this is a fake image.. like a person above, i agree that this iphone looks just like the old ones and i was hoping for a better design. Hopefullly apple makes a much better design…

  • You're all stupid

That picture looks like an iPhone 3G in a black case

  • looks like a 3gs with a case on it to me people are gullabke

  • I agree about the pic as well, it just looks like a thicker 3g. My contract Is up for a new iPhone but I won’t be buying a 3gs, there really isn’t much of a difference between the 3g & 3gs to make me shell out double the money. Even with my glass screen cracked I’m still waiting for the 4g lol. As for the ipad, I need to personally see it and play with it before buying it. If I feel it’s worth it then why not have both the ipad and iPhone?

  • Michael

My contract with Verizon is up in April and I’ve been looking forward to getting the iPhone. However, from a couple of things that I’ve read (rumored or not), I might hold off now until the 4G comes out. I’m so sick of my Blackberry Curve, but if I need to wait a bit longer for the 4G then I will. JUST MAKE IT QUICK!!!!

  • If they don’t change design I won’t buy it . I am tired of it.. I had 2g 3g 3gs. I won’t buy a new phone for a better camera .. Only if they change the design. Also the one in the pic it’s horrible

  • Lynne

I really dont like the look of the 4g
    its uglier
i got the 3gs recently and its all i could ask for.
No need to wait until apple release the 4g- its most likely to be a disapointment as they only change little things each time they bring out the latest.
So i wouldnt bother wasting my time waiting for another less-attractive copy of the recent iphone

  • hope it’ll be better than just an 3g upgrade

  • Nomi

I dnt think iPhone 4 would be released in June this year it’s gone be next year some time .. Maybe in april / may time… Apple are gone be thinking on making most of profit on the ipad and iPhone 3gs because it’s a gd phone as well .. And plus even though iPhone is good blackberry is more popular among everyone so I guess Apple is going to try and take over blackberry… And for that they are going to take their time and bring out the iPhone 4 when they are ready!! So guyz dnt hope of getting the iPhone 4 this year

  • Darius

Just looks like a 3GS with a cover on to me.

  • Slob

The photo looks like just an iPhone 3GS or 3G in a black case. If that’s the real prototype, I’m definitely out.

  • DapperDon

I think the ipad will be a success. Most people think of the ipad as a unique product rather than an oversised iphone. The two are quite different and the ipad will probably appeal to a specfic market rather than anybody, like the iphone.
There is noway however ipads will replace home computers as they lack flash and multitasking (which is dispicable), everything EVERYTHING (even usbs) require adaptors and aplications can only be purchased from the app store (Yes.. the very one that banns apps for damn flipping reason other than foolish and lucrative discretion.)

My only predicament is whether to wait for the new 4g or get a 3gs now and trade in… what to do what to do..

  • eoin

i went to upgrade my existing contract to an iphone 3gs tonight. the guy at vodafone australia told me that i was best to hold off for a couple of months if i could. rumour in vodafone is that the new model should be released at the end of April. He says that they have 6 weeks waiting list for iphone units and have none in stock at the minute. They are being given very small quantities for their retail shops to just keep them ticking over. The point is that he says it is the exact same scenario that came about just prior to the launch of the 3gs. no stock being given to them. i dont know but i will wait for another couple of months now and endure my dated blackberry.

  • dhatzel

i was at at&t the other day and i was wondering when i was due for an update so when the new iphone cam e out i could get it. i am due for one in july and i said well i hope by then its out. the guy said that it will be. he also said it should be out in june. idk if he right just telling you what he said.

  • I suspect that the next iPhone is on it’s way. Apple has been acting as if they are preparing for their latest handset, not only by what eoin mentioned, but I also noticed while browsing numerous websites including daily visits to apple uk’s official iPhone 3gs website, within 3 days they suddenly removed over 12 of their iPhone advertisements and now only have 3 available. Therefore it makes me think why apple have made such changes if they are trying to sell as many 3gs handsets as possible. Maybe we could be lucky to see the 4g model within the next 3 months. Then I bet they will be consistant and bring out a 4gs model shortly after that, with a few additions as before. I agree a change in the handset design would be nice. I am going to try and wait it out for the latest iPhone, as my contract is about to expire by the end of feb which is only in two days. As for the iPad I am not interested. It’s a good product to consider for businesses eg it could replace the use of PDA’s in restaurants used to take customer orders or for managers to keep on track of tables and which staff is allocated to each table, which are free or in use and monitor bills from each table and the total income for the day.

  • How about an updated 3GS for multi-app, updated camera , flash and 64gB memory (?), ibooks (or whatever it is).

Apple to focus on iPad and pick-up the 3G upgraders with above (ish). What’s the new technology and forward thinking design elements from Apple. I haven’t necessarily heard of anything yet. What is the innovation: not what do Apple need to do achieve everyone else’s design.

  • Robert

One thing you can count on is the intelligence of the Apple iPhone marketing team. There is no way they are going to release the iPhone 4G early. Many people see that the iPad is a weak product. The 4G will definitely steal most of the thunder Apple has been working so hard to create for the iPad. Play your game Apple. I will wait. Even though my 3G screen is busted.

  • you say june… but realistically there is no reason for apple to release it in par with the ipad. they would be losing out on sales because im pretty sure some apple fans would like both the iphone 4g and the ipad. my guess is november / december ready for the christmas run up where everyone spends a huge amount of money.

  • Im really hoping that pic is fake (as usually blury pics like that are fake) It looks thicker from what we can see. OMG, it looks as thick as 2 iPhones on the top of each other!!

Just like other guys above, my contract has ended 2 months ago and me holding the upgrade for the next new iPhone. And like someone mentioned above, iPhone and iPad are 2 different products ( its like comparing a motorbike with a car) so yes, will get the iPad too.

  • the ipad seems to be an improved version of the o2 joggler what is out which u can see is nothing like a iphone so no hype should be taken away from the iphone 4g

  • The iPhone 4g NEEDS flash! Please :)

  • I spoke to t-mobile on the phone today telling them i was leaving to get an iphone on another network. they told me the new iphone 4g is being released towards the end of april

  • I’m going to wait for the Ipad nano that’s hopefully out in June. Not that it makes any difference as I’m on a 24 month contract ending June 2011! I think that the type of people who will buy the Ipad will also have/be getting an Iphone anyway, they seem to be marketed at different target audiences.

  • I agree with Brandon – I have just sold my BB Storm on eBay, and plan to use the money to end my contract with Vodafone. What piece of crap. I’m hoping for an early release of the iPhone 4G – if it’s not out in April ill be getting an iPhone 3G S, im sick of waiting to use a decent handset!

  • totalparanoia

trust me folks, the iphone 4g is comming out soon, probably sometime between april and june. the reason for this is becasue there are reliable reports that the company that makes the iphone for apple have been told to geer up production and start an extra production line, another company that produces camera units has recieved an order for 5 megapixel units, quite a lot, people thought these would be for the ipad but we now know that the ipad hasnt.

also apple not long ago hired someone familiar with wireless standards inc draft n to work with them.this is not likely to be any other department other than the iphone.

if you delve in the code of the iphone os update software tthere are identifiers relating to iphone products inc the nokia sounding n89(i think). the identifiers relate to a new ipod,a new ipod touch(probably) and a new iphone.

all these reasons and more all add upto a new iphone being realeased and that means it be soon as apple are making preperations ahead of its release.

the ipad is targeted at a different audience and so the iphone wont necesscary take customers away from buying it.

hold off from buying a iphone 3g or 3gs and it be worth the wait.

  • I am in a similar position to most people in the UK.

I’m on a 3G and dont want to upgrade to a 3GS when the next iPhone is potentially due in a few months.

If you look at the previous specs of the iphones as they have been released, you can see a natural progression with the memory.. so im guessing 32gb, 64gb, and maybe a 128gb but not too sure about the last one.
The company who supply Apple their cameras for the iphone are making 5million 5 megapixel cameras to order.. half for the new iphone and half for the ipad.

The next thing is that HTC desire will have an OLED screen and this is meant to be an iphone killer… so OLED is definetly on the cards.

The idea of removable battery is totally doubtful.. it has been a problem for apple.. but if you look at the line up and where they are headed with the mobile market.. it just doesnt make sense to extend the life of the phone easily.. otherwise they would loose out on people upgrading… i just hope they use the battery technology that is in the latset macbook pro’s… to give it extended battery life.. that, i think is their hardest challenge.

i would personally LOVE to see Apple sort out the Flash problem. more and more websites are using it and its getting annoying. I think “j” is right that with the release of the ipad… if they dont fix the flash issue.. or put another version of safari on the iphone which can translate flash.. then they are gonna have real issues to sell it.. but you know Apple… they just love for people to convert to iWeb instead of use flash! hehe..

I would personally buy an ipad AND an iphone 4. There have been many jokes about the ipad being too big and linking it with an iphone… its not. its the answer to all those crappy netbooks.. the ones you get free (in the uk) when you sign upto a mobile broadband deal!!

O2 and Vodafone are gonna have a field day signing people up to mobile broadband contacts and getting the ipad for about £100!

ipad for the home.. iphone for the move.. you could store all music on your iphone and keep the films on an ipad for better viewing. looks like im gonna have re-code all my iphone movies for a better resolution.. damn it!

Finally… i would like to see a new headphone from apple.. the in ear headphones are ok but i prefer the over the head “cans” hadphones and if they were to do a deal with someone like skull candy or sennheiser to intergrate a microphone on the cable… i would be so happy!

Apple know what they are doing… trust me… they are going to re-take the smartphone market into their hands..

Im a Mac.. and PC’s are not iPads!

    Rant over.

  • dragon fly

I have never bought any apple product. I do like the designs and almost bought an I phone last year. I am due for a new phone in summer and I like the design of the i-phone the only problem is I understand that the I-phone can not download BBC-iplayer content, which I love about my current phone.

When my time comes to re-new I will have a good look at the 4G if it is out otherwise I will go for something else like N900 or HTC desire of X10. I am still quite unsure

  • joey ireland

they will not release the iphone 4g because 4g is a sim card connectivity not the phone it self so if they brought this out am pritty sure tht every phone manufacture would bring a new 4g phone out or mention a 4g sim card. and the apple iphone 4g has concept art only and prototypes :)

  • I work for orange and their is no way the iPhone 4gs will be given an official release date until 3 weeks before your looking at June being the earliest until it will come out and around £600 for the base model(32gb),or around £60 a month to get the handset for free, their are better phones like the htc hero anyway

  • I think the iphone 4 will come with flash and an hd quality camera.

Forget the ipad, my mac mini 2.0 is still going strong and one computer is enough for me, besides I need a new mobile phone and still haven’t seen any on the market that is as slick as the iphone 1.

  • i just got a i-phone 3GS 16GB on O2 and to be honest the difference between the 3GS and the 4G is nothing really, the 3GS is bloody fast, OK the 4G will have I-Chat and it will be slightly faster not by much though…. first of all who the hell will use The I-chat anyways, Not many people will have the 4G area signal at the same time, and i only know a few people that have a I-Phone. Plus you would think they would update the camera on it??? but no…. still 3.2, i have to admit the focus and the quality is surprising but still, its 2010, not 2005… the need to up the anti a bit.. its a great phone but if they do bring out a I-Phone 4G its got to blow everyone away, and i really don’t think it will.
It will be like “OH WOW! a new I-Phone, i want one i want!” then after a few months no one will care, they are going to have to give it at least a 8.2 mega pixel camera. Phones are already starting to take over, such as the HTC desire, HTC Mini HD, all with CPU’s and Ram, and good camera’s and a windows OS. Sorry Apple but if you are going to release that Ugly phone (judging by the picture) you are going to have to do a lot better than that….

  • and all i can say about the I-Pad is LOL….. specs are crappy, its like we are going back in time when it comes to hardware…..

  • calauchlan

people just get the n900 its truly amazing full solid state qwerty and complete freedom with the software you can do whatever you want with this device its brilliant and far better value for money than any of the iphones/bb/or htc devices

  • anyone who buys the ipad (aka the retarded netbook) needs to take it and beat themselves round the head with it. seriously it is a glorified iphone that cant phone people. it uses the same app store… derrr meaning it will do little more than an iphone. granted the iphone was good in its day, now it is a icon of conformism, although an iphone user will always deny it their are better phones out there their are better phones, htc hero for example.im praying that the 4g will be good and a decent phone other just a pretty accessory, also i hope they have better updates than “copy and paste” seriously who do they think they were kidding, windows mobile phones have been doing that for years, and then they are rude enough to advertise it as a new amazing feature, unbelievable.

hope this will make some people think for themselves

  • lol this loooks like exactly like the previous iphones anyways apple have been very succesfull on the iphone design but its being around for 3 years now we need some change in the design and a flash for the camera multitasking the ability to send files over bluetooth and PLEASE AN IMPROVED BATTERY LIFE ( i hate it when i go to college and plug my iphone to change on the pc or mac)

  • Apple will need to hurry up. I am already thinking of going to HTC I am to now due an upgrade and I will not upgrade to the 3gs aint no different really ok so it is faster. There are some impressive looking Androids coming out thick and fast. Seriously do not know what to do but I dont think we will be waiting much longer to help us all who is due an upgrade to make our minds up.
