Last month we talked about Apple delaying 27 inch iMac Shipments due to screen problems. Since then it would appear that Apple have been working hard to fix the problem.
The first update came in late December entitled, 27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0. Apple advised that this firmware update applies to the big-screen iMac’s ATI Radeon HD 4670 and 4850 graphics cards, which reportedly address issues that may cause image interruption and display flickering.
Since then, Apple has advised that they have released another firmware update called 27-inch iMac Display Firmware Update 1.0. This is a slight variation from the previous one as this firmware update is altering the display firmware and “address issues that may cause intermittent display flickering”, rather than the graphics card. This update is 294KB download, available direct from Apple and has said to only take a few minutes to install.
Yesterday it was also rumoured that Apple was halting production of the 27-inch iMacs until they could solve the problems. Last month, shipments were pushed back by three weeks, with current orders also facing a three weeks delay too. Apart from the flickering screen problems, customers have also reported a yellow-tinting problem.
Apple have still been reluctant to say that the delay issues are related to the recurring problems to the iMac screens and have stated that long wait times are purely to do with high demand for the product. Whatever the reason, let's hope that Apple can tackle the problem head on as the complaints/comments on the Apple Discussion forum just keep on coming in and as a result have reached a staggering 271 pages with over 500,000 views.
