We may think that downloading applications from the Apple Apps Store is a massive money making scheme for Apple and its developers, as it is estimated that Apple's revenue generated from the App Store is between $60 million and $110 million per quarter, however according to an analysis done by 24/7 Wall St there is an ugly truth which lurks underneath these statistics which is already affecting the music and film industry as we speak, and that word is ‘piracy’.
Developers of iPod Touch and iPhone applications have said that they have seen a rapid increase in piracy rates and how easy it is for pirates to obtain a counterfeit copy. So how has this occurred? Well, reports believe that is down to something which is called ‘jailbreaking’ or getting their Apple gadgets ‘unlocked’. Jailbroken iPhone allows the users to make changes to its operating system as well as allowing them to install new applications. People believe that this process is becoming easier to do, because even the non technically minded can jail break their phone so it could potentially pose a threat to more piracy being filtered into the Apple applications process.
So should Apple be bothered about the risk this could have to their business? Well, as Apple takes 30% share of the Apple applications it will be probably costing them some pretty hefty dollars but I would suspect that Apple will only try to diminish this piracy problem if they thought it was going to be a serious threat and at the moment I don’t think many Apple users will risk ‘jailbreaking’ their gadgets, if it means losing their warranty.
What do you think? Do you think Apple and their developers should take action now or is the threat to small for it be serious problem? Leave us a comment and let us know…
