Amazon Kindle DX Available to Buy in UK from 19th January

In November 2009, the Amazon Kindle was listed as the ‘most gifted item’ on the Amazon online shop as well seeing sales sky rocketing for ebook reader over the Christmas period, so it is no wonder that Amazon is wanting to cash in on this success again by announcing that its larger ebook reader, the Amazon Kindle DX will be available to buy in over 100 countries, including the UK.

The larger screen is ideal for highly-formatted reading content such as magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and PDF documents, according to Ian Freed, vice president of Kindle at Amazon.

Although 9.7 inch e reader is proposed to cost $489 and will be available to buy in over 100 countries, it would seem that the UK may find their pockets a lot emptier when it comes to the Amazon checkout. Due to import laws in the UK (VAT and shipping fee) the prices will spiral to $120 more expensive, which will mean it will cost us a whopping £375 to have the Amazon Kindle DX delivered to the UK.

The reason for the pay in increased price is that UK customers will need to buy the ereader from the US store and then pay for downloading the books, which will be done over the AT&T global network.

Amazon says the new Kindle DX will start shipping from 19 January.

  • Don’t these prices for both the 6″ Kindle and the Kindle DX seem kind of high, for a technology that you can be pretty sure won’t be supported forever?

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
