Palm Pre Apps Store Coming to UK on March 2010

When we heard that US owners were already enjoying an app store for their Palm Pre, I could hear the anguishing groans from UK owners as yet again they were being left behind on the bandwagon. However, there maybe light at the end of the tunnel for Palm Pre owners in the UK (including Ireland, Spain and Germany) as it has been announced that they will soon be able to buy apps from an online App Catalog, similar to their Atlantic friends.

Recent news from Palm has suggested that users in Europe will be able to buy webOS apps from March 2010. It's good news for UK Palm Pre users but how much choice does it give you? Well, compared to the iTunes App Store which holds thousands of apps, the Palm Pre App Catalog only has approximately 600 paid apps for sale, so we could say very little.

Although, the number of apps maybe on the waif side it would seem that Palm might be trying to overcome this issue by enticing developers to join the program, following a blog post on, Palm Developer Network Blog. In the post it was suggested that developers would be given, ‘greater freedom and choice of how to get your applications to market and unparalleled control to promote and grow your business. For developers looking to make money, it's all about speed, promotion, and reacting to customer feedback. Our platform gives you greater access to customers and faster cycle times to make higher-quality, compelling applications.’

As Palm decide to use the more softer approach to woo their developers, could this be a step in the right direction or just too much of a delicate approach in a very lucrative and demanding technology market?

  • RIM and Andriod are going to have to do alot more than start an app store to stay in competition with iphone.

  • Really annoying that the states have 1000+ apps and we in the UK have access only to the 300+ free apps on the beta app store! Waiting in anticipation for the next major update (1.4), flash, video etc and of course 3d games. Seems to me that if palm want developers then the machanism for exchanging money needs to be up and running! Developers do work for Qudos, but they work harder for cash!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
