Top 5 Helpful Hints when Buying Broadband

As you will know, there are a number of internet suppliers in the UK all offering a wide range of broadband packages. The range of options available makes it particularly hard to know what you are getting when buying a broadband package or switching internet suppliers. Here are the top 5 helpful hints when looking for a broadband connection.

1. Availability

The first and most important thing to check when buying broadband is to check the availability of services in your area. This can be done through a local availability test, where you type in your postcode and the search will give you all of the available internet suppliers for your area. This is quite a common tool now, with most of the internet suppliers and some broadband comparison sites offering this type of service.

2. Browsing Habits and Shop Around

Working out how often you will use your internet connection and what you are doing with it will help you get the best deal. There is no point paying £30+ for an unlimited internet connection that you hardly use or paying £5 a month on a capped service that charges you for going over if you are a heavy user. Don't just settle for the first broadband package you see, shop around and compare broadband packages; there are numerous broadband comparison sites out there to make it easier to pick the best deal for you.

3. Check Review Sites

Before buying a package, look at various review sites to see what other people have said about the internet provider and check that the company has a good customer service team in case you have problems in the future.

4. Watch out for Hidden Charges

Check the small print of any contract before signing up to a broadband package. Some internet providers charge a fee for setting up their service and you could also incur heavy bills if you start to go over your download allowance.

5. Check for Free Stuff!

Most internet suppliers offer free items as an incentive to join them, they can range from wireless modems, Home Hubs (BT) and even laptops or games consoles. But be aware that the more expensive the item the more you will pay in the long run, i.e. more money a month or longer contracts. It's nice to get something for free, but stick to your budget and go for the broadband that suits you best.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
