PC game delays getting on the collective tits

ac2Last week I was frustrated and annoyed, and for once, it was not due to having to go to work, the wife, or even  my pay packet. No, it was because I am a PC gamer. I don’t have a PS3, nor an Xbox 360. I have forgone these for an expensive graphics card and a Razer mouse. Sometimes I wish I had not though because If I had a PS3, I would now be playing Assassins Creed 2, the PC version of which has been pushed back until the first quarter of 2010. The reason given by Ubisoft is that they need more time for the Dev team to provide quality testing etc. so they can provide a better game for you.

Well, I first have to mention that this is purely my opinion, but I am not alone if I say that that is rubbish. For a start, Why is the PC version getting special attention to quality testing? Secondly, Why is the PC dev team slower than all the other dev teams when it comes to shipping the game? Some might say that the PC version needs to be able to run on a huge amount of variable PC set ups, therefore testing needs to take longer. But these company’s know what they are doing. They have been making PC games long before the PS3 and Xbox came about, so why don’t they attribute more time and resources if they know this?

The reason as most of us PC gamers know is piracy. The company’s like Ubisoft are hoping that games like AC2 will be old news by the time the PC version comes out, and less of a target for piracy. There are potentially other reasons as well, like Console sales. Sony, and Microsoft can sell their consoles on the back of a perceived good game such as AC2, and if you own a PC, you won’t plump to by the XBox, plus the AC2 game. Us PC gamers are used to this type of treatment, Street Fighter IV, Batman: Arkham Asylum, to name two.

You know what though? As long as their are PC’s, there will be games, and this type of treatment will just put PC gamers backs up, and perhaps thats what the big game studios want, to annoy us so much, we all fall into line and buy a PS3 or Xbox where pirating is less of an issue. Well I for one am not going to. I will have to wait, again. At some stage though there is going to need to be a solution to this problem that does not involve alienating a large part of your customer base. And if Ubisoft does not find it, perhaps a competitor will.

  • I’m not sure everyone will agree with you pablo.

  • The real reason why they pushed back the release date of assassins creed 2, is to trump up the sales of the console version first. That company programs their console games on pc computers and there tying to spread propaganda how they have to wait to release it for pc? I smell bs. It reminds me of microsoft releasing certain games that only work under their vista operating system.

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
