The most anticipated game of the year is finally out and it looks like our patience has been rewarded with an extraordinary game. This first person shooter has only been on sale for less than two days and it has already racked up sales of over £187,000,000 selling nearly 5 million copies in its first day alone.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision and is available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Modern Warfare 2 is set immediately after the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In the game you control 5 different characters, depending on the level and stage of the game but for much of the game you are Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson, a member of Task Force 141 an elite commando unit.
In the game, Vladimir Makarov and his group of radical Ultra-nationalists have returned to prominence and fearful of Makarov’s growing influence, the global community establishes Task Force 141 to counter their threat.
The game is truly ‘out of this world’ as you are taken not only to Afghanistan and Russia but also to the International Space Station! The gameplay is fast and thrilling and the constant pace of action can leave you disorientated and yet wanting more. Modern Warfare 2 will test your reflexes and accuracy while at the very same time engage those very basic of instincts: survival and fear.
The graphics are stunning as you would expect from a game of this quality, however you need to be aware, this is a violent and sometimes controversial game. At one point, players are given the option to skip a section of the game where you can shoot innocent people at an airport. Even Activision themselves have admitted that there are some “disturbing elements” to the game.
That said, it is just a game. And now is not the time to place to engage in the debate about violent and video games. So that aside, MW2 contains a special mode called “Special Ops” which is a stand-alone experience separate from the main game (and the multiplayer game). This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, and is based on short-burst challenge missions instead of full-on story-driven levels. At the start a handful of special operation missions are unlocked and more are unlocked as you progress.
If you are thinking of getting this game for your PC you will need to make sure your PC matches the system requirements:
- Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz, 1.8 Duo Core or higher, or AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor.
- 512 MB memory (1024 for Vista)
- 16 GB of free hard disk space
- Nvidia GeForce 6600GT (256 MB) / ATI Radeon 1600XT (256 MB) or better
