Floating Record Player- oddly UFO like

floating record playerThere’s something about vinyl (aside from the fact that it’s the worlds most annoying word to spell) that just makes it that little bit cooler than CD or MP3. I think it’s the substance. CDs are small and flimsy and MP3s are, well, invisible. Vinyl actually feels like you’re getting something for your money. Plus if  ‘Shaun of the Dead’ is to be believed then they’ll be much more use come the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

You have to admit though, old fashioned record players just don’t cut it in the high tech world, and DJ decks are a little too large for the everyday living room. Which is why I really hope that the Floating Record Player crosses the line from awesome concept to gadget reality.

Designer, Rhea Jeong, says-

“The record player uses a carrier and dock outfitted with a magnetic and auto-calibrating control system which carries the LP into thin air as it is playing music. a self-running record player shaped in the form of a red sphere, contains a needle, amplifier and speaker, spins around the record, bringing the music to life.

The sphere that plays the vinyl was technically influenced by the 'vinyl killer', currently the world's smallest LP player that has a built-in motor, amplifier and speaker. Simple colors and shapes express a kind of astronomical movement between the object and space.

The levitation is managed electronically. Once turning the player on, you can manage the elevation levels through the touch sensors on the front side of the base unit."

Ok so half of that I didn’t understand (explanations in the comments) but from what I gather if it were to actually be made, the red ball would contain everything you’d need for the disc to actually play including the needle, speaker and possibly the kitchen sink, and the block at the bottom would be just for levitation purposes using magnets (wait- wouldn’t magnets wipe the disc? Or is that just an MP3 hazard? Or a lie?)

I don’t know how likely it is to ever become a reality, but it’s be pretty sweet if it did huh? And now I’m thinking about other things in the home you could float- flowers, the TV, knives…

Ok, those maybe aren’t possible. Except perhaps the knives. And that’d be damned dangerous.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
