Christmas Gift Guide 2009: Top gifts for your Mum

0piccyMum’s are easy to buy Christmas presents for right? Bunch of flowers, something smelly and if all else fails go halves with your younger sibling and make them pick. Or maybe you should try and get her something different this year. The five gifts below are either completely new ideas, or an update for a traditional idea. Either way, they’re thing that your Mum might actually want.

PoGo Instant Photo Printer

1photoIf your Mum is anything like my Mum she loves taking photos, has finally been persuaded to upgrade to a (very basic) digital camera, and… never does anything with it because she prefers to have actual photos. Perfect present for her here- connect the camera by USB and sixty seconds later she has an actual physical photograph. To embarrass you with in front of your significant other.

Chill or Warm Wine Wrap

2 wineWho doesn't like a nice bottle of wine? (I highly recommend the Black Tower range whatever colour your Mum drinks). Add something a little extra to a traditional Mum present with a wine wrap. Either put it in the freezer and use it to keep the white wine cool, or warm it in the microwave and ensure your red stays at the optimum drinking temperature. It can also double as a mat to keep food warm or cool too. Two presents in one.

Slanket

3slanketA tutor of mine bought one of these so he could look like a snugly Jedi (I quote). Slankets are essentially blankets with sleeves- perfect for when your Mum finally finds the time to sit down and chill out on the sofa- and now she can still hold onto her cup of tea without having to unwrap herself for a sip. Also good if, like in my family, your Mum constantly complains that your Dad is a duvet stealer! (A note to you lovers out there- great gift for your girlfriend too, since these things are big enough for two people to snuggle up in. With only one sleeve each obviously.)

Bubble Bath Machine

4bbmSo, she bakes the cake, she buys and wraps all the presents, she cooks the Christmas dinner AND washes up afterwards, and at the end of it all is still buzzing around offering the family coffee. So let your Mum have a relaxing bath as soon as possible. But instead of the usual bubble bath, body lotion and shower gel gift set from Boots, go a bit further with a Bubble Bath Machine and she can have one of those fully bubbly baths that you always see in the movies, but just can't achieve in real life.

Life Timer

5lifeNo, it doesn't count down the days until your Mum dies (which is what I worried about when someone first showed this to me). A series of buttons around the face of the digital display relate to different aspects of daily life- next holiday, next tea break and so on. Then your Mum can set the time, and keep an eye on how many days left until you have to look for her birthday gift. (Just don't look at it if she's got it set to counting up from when she last… erm… yeah.)
