Mobile Music Revolution; 3 and Spotify Team Up To Stream Music to Your Handset

spotifyIt has been confirmed that Spotify and the UK mobile phone operator 3 are working on a mobile phone bundled with access to Spotify. Starting next month 3 will start selling HTC's Hero smartphone and include Spotify premium access in the subscription.

A two year contract at £35 a month gets you unlimited use of Spotify Premium on both your Google Android-powered Hero handset (for which you will have to pay £99 up front) and on your PC for the duration of the 2 year contract. Also included is 750 minutes to other mobiles, unlimited texts, unlimited data and the other usual 3 tariff features such as Skype and Facebook.

Spotify Premium members get unlimited access to the complete Spotify library without advertising, plus the ability to stream at a higher bit rate of 320kbps to your PC. There are no details yet on the bit rate that will be available on the phone over the 3G network.

3This is the first time that a mobile phone and network provider are being bundled together with a subscription to Spotify. What is interesting is that the head of Hutchison Whampoa (who own 3) recently made an investment in Spotify. Spotify currently has over 1 million subscribers to its paid service that is currently available in the U.K. and some parts of Europe. There are plans for a U.S. version this year.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
