It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but UN telecommunications agency chief, Hamadoun Toure, has warned that the battlefield for World War 3 won't be in the fields of France, but will happen online.
He warned that countries needed to be aware that there was no such thing as a superpower in a cyber war and loss of vital networks would quickly cripple any nation.
The best way for nations to protect themselves against cyber attacks, is through the obvious method of improved online security. The USA and South Korea are two countries taking preventative steps now to protect themselves from malicious international attack.
America has recently ordered 1,000 cybersecurity bods to look after its online security, while South Korea is investing in training 3,000 'cyber sheriffs'. Tolkein couldn't make this stuff up.
There is a serious side to the security concern though after Estonia and Georgia's recently suffered attacks.
Estonia's troubles started in April 2007 when authorities disclosed plans to move a Russian World War II memorial into a military graveyard from a town square.
Ethnic Russians in the country revolted, resulting in an outbreak of cyber-attacks on Estonian government websites. Georgian servers fell under a similar attack after the government controversially invaded South Ossetia last year.
Online security has been particular newsworthy lately with numerous email accounts falling prey to phishing attacks in recent days.
