A whole new concept of time

alessiWhen I say laser to you, what comes to mind? Probably not time pieces. For me it’s ‘Austin Powers’ every time, but I just like the idea of sharks with lasers on their heads. Usually James Bond or a similar spy will eventually wander into your head (or at least roll in strapped to a table with a red beam pointed at his… spy camera…).

Sorry- I got a little off topic there. The point was, laser to me equals burny thing. Which is why this concept design for a watch that laser projects the time onto your wrist amused me so much. You can just imagine the scene:

Billy: Hey Frank- do you have the time?
Frank: Yeah sure, it’s ARGH! OMGWTFBBQ! *writhes in pain while Billy goes off to phone the speaking clock*

Actually it’s (hopefully) nothing like that. The concept is pretty swish actually. Designed by Andy Kurovets the Alessi looks like a quite nice but rather bog standard piece of fashion jewellery.  It looks to be made of plastic or some similar acrylic seeming material, and is a simple, elegant curve which hangs onto the wrist. A cleverly concealed button can then be pressed which will cause the time to be projected on to your skin. Simple.

Well, actually- a couple of things. It looks very pretty and I’m sure it would be highly impressive used in a dark room such as a nightclub at 3am, but its not very practical is it? What happens if you’ve got really dark skin or hairy arms- would it still work? And the angle looks like it’d be a pain to read, what with the projector being in the way and all. If it projected onto the wall in front of you, that would be cool (although you would have to run around trying to find a suitable wall or, failing that, a stranger in a white t shirt).

Ok, so a couple of flaws. But it’s great to see some innovative watches which don’t require you to be able to read binary or count a random sequence of lights. In my book, that’s a win!

  • @ Andrew Cain: Same thinking like you, it’s by LED and if we use for long time, I don’t know what happen later, such as skin cancer,…

  • Wow..!! That’s really great..!! A must say new and a very awesome concept for time… but I doubt it will affect the living being’s.. through its radiation..

  • There was concern on the source site about skin cancer. I can’t really say if it would be dangerous. Would there be enough usage to count it as prolonged exposure?

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
