The clue is in the name!

There have been a number of shotgun reviews regarding SL that I feel totally miss the point. I have only been using Macs for about a year and a half, but found myself very quickly deploying two servers in the small business arena taking in house IT the much higher levels due to ease of use. The framework of Leopard was a key part of this, as Leopard offered a much friendlier interface on both clients and servers.

So I went out and got a client pack of SL with some caution, and installed it on a couple of early 2008 Mac Minis. The result was interesting and at first unnoticed. After about 55 mins install time I landed on the desktop. To be honest my thoughts were what’s the big deal?

The install was fairly clean, it integrated perfectly with the existing directory binding and apart from a few spurious warnings the mobile network homes seemed to be working fine.

It was only after about an hour of using the new OS did things come apparent. Yes big bumper new features were missing, but given the information that Apple had put out made it clear that we weren’t going to see any new features. You quickly notice the improvements to menus of the dock items, expose is absolutely superb and the changes to stacks and drilling down into folders is spot on (although seems a little slow, not sure if this is a bug or unique to my systems).

Then you see how quickly the native apps run, mail and Ical are different animals all together. Startup and shut downs are impressive as well as Safaris performance.

In my opinion Snow Leopard is what Leopard always wanted to be, refined, athletic and capable. While this isn’t a Windows 7 reinvent, that brings all the hassle of a new Microsoft OS and while I’m yet to use it I still wonder why they had to produce it so quickly after the release of Vista, and will the same problems follow through.

No, Snow Leopard leaves the keen eyed user feeling edgy, not sure of what is to come. It’s no new OS, but it’s no Leopard somethings changed, somethings different, a new species. Given the blistering improvements to the simple native apps, one can’t help but wonder what this new cat will do with purpose designed applications that use the GCD and OpenCL.

Snow Leopards time will come not during it’s release week, but 6 maybe 12 months later. When 3rd party software houses make use of the new platform and start producing some serious software.

  • Hi Toby, Your comment was a very interesting read!

Unfortunately I am on vacation at the moment so i haven’t been able to get my hands on my own software yet but I will be on the case as soon as i get back!

It’s interesting to see that at first you thought what’s the big deal? And then as you continued to use it more and more you saw that although there wasn’t big improvements, the small improvements that were apparent really improves how the OS works.

I emailed an editor from another site who is a good friend and he said pretty much exactly the same as you, Snow Leopard is like what Leopard always wanted to be!

    Thanks for you comment/ Review.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
