After a few weeks of rumours Dell have officially launched the Dell Inspiron 11z in the USA and it should be officially launched in the UK in the next week or so. The Inspiron 11z is a small ultra thin notebook with a
1366×768 resolution 11.6-inch display, but it isn’t the screen size that makes this machine different, it is what is inside.
The netbook revolution has been fuelled by the Intel Atom processor which was designed by Intel specifically for the netbook market. However the Atom isn’t a powerhouse, in fact the performance of a single core Atom processor is about half that offered by an equivalent Celeron.
The Inpsiron 11z doesn’t use ubiquitous Atom but rather a new breed of Celeron processors called the 1.2GHz Celeron M ULV 723. The key here is the ULV meaning ultra low voltage. Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors only give out a bit more heat than the Atom but have a greatly improved performance.
Because of the more powerful processor, the new Dell Inspiron 11z doesn’t run Windows XP and have 1GB of memory like just about every netbook out there, instead it has enough power to run Vista (and it will also run Windows 7 when it comes out in October) and comes with 2GB of memory.
On the storage front it comes with a 250GB hard disk (bigger than the normal 160GB for netbooks) with a 500GB hard drive option coming soon. As with most machine in this range there is no built in DVD drive and you have to use a external USB unit if you need one.
The Dell Inspiron 11z is available now in the USA for $399 and the 11z will be priced at around £300 once it is launched in the UK.

Finally an affordable subnotebook. However, there are better alternatives available at the moment, like the Acer Timeline 1810T. Let’s see how much a tuned 11z with a better CPU, 4 GB Ram and a SSD will cost us.
It would be better to have the same laptop but with duo core proccesor.
