Random cute thing of the week most definitely goes to this little gadget, the Twilight Turtle, designed to help soothe children to sleep at night, although I’m sure those of us with sleep problems could get away with giving it a bash too. In the interests of science of course. Not for the aww-factor at all.
And science it claims to have. In abundance. This terrific turtle does three things- it lights up, it projects stars, and it reads to the sleepy party. But this is no ordinary bright white night light, no. Retailer IWOOT describes it thusly-
‘The autumnal glow of amber radiates warmth, good cheer and peace; blue is supposed to calm the mind and the senses – it’s one of the most natural colours in the world. It encourages relaxation and promotes a good night’s sleep; green is the colour of life – it too can be found everywhere in nature and is said to have healing and rejuvenating properties.’
So you’re getting your colour therapy as you sleep essentially. And if you really can’t get to sleep even with the light show of relaxationary aids, the Twilight Turtle then tries to educate you about the cosmos, with it’s ability to project the eight most recognisable constellations onto the ceiling. (I can only think of the plow, the great bear, the little bear and orion and his belt- what’re the other four?! Oh wait- IWOOT has a list!)
My only mild critique is that it switches itself off after 45 minutes. I’m not sure about kids, but it usually takes me longer than that to fall asleep. Although you can hit a button easily that starts it off again so I suppose you can get round that easily enough.
The Twilight Turtle comes with a certificate of adoption and a book to explain to your child all about their new friend. Very cutesy, but if it’ll help them to sleep without being afraid of the dark then who can find fault with that?
