The Copyright Office is considering a request by the Electronic Frontier Organisation to make the widespread use of jailbreaking legal.
Now for those of you that don’t know, jailbreaking is where iPhone users hack their devices to accept different software that hasn’t been accepted for use by the iPhone App Store.
Apple filed a comments section with the office last week, and this said that if the practice were to become legal, hackers could get access to the phone’s BBP software (Baseband Processor) which enables a connection to the all important cell phone towers. “Taking control of the BBP software would be much the equivalent of getting inside the firewall of a corporate computer – to give potentially catastrophic results” says Apple.
The EFF attorney who made this request, Fred Von Lohmann, called Apple’s claims preposterous and then told regulators that there were as a million unauthorised, jailbroken iPhones already out there so if hackers wanted to access the BBP software they would have already done so. He also added that is Apple’s claims were realistic, then Google’s Android handsets would be just as much of a danger as an unlocked iPhone.
What do you think about the use of jailbreaking? Yes you can get pretty much whatever you want on your iPhone but isn’t it ultimately better to stick to what’s legal?
