Apple iPod Touch Users to Pay for Critical Patches

In a move that has sparked a healthy dose of indignation amongst iPod Touch users, Apple are charging for a critical update that will correct 46 software holes.ipod_touch

Touch users will have to pay US$10 to download the necessary patches for the iPod Touch, while privileged iPhone users can download them for free.

These flaws include quite serious security concerns such as allowing hackers to send a virus embedded in a PDF document to your device.

Another flaw involves users connecting to a malicious Exchange server, which Apple said may lead to the disclosure of sensitive information.

For a full list of flaws, Apple has put together a security article covering all of the problems you could encounter.

If you’re not particularly concerned about any private information on your iPod Touch, you would still need to fork out for this upgrade in order to get on board with the iPhone’s new 3.0 software.

Basically if you want to update your iPod Touch so that it functions as it should in the first place, iTunes 8.2 will require you to click through to the iTunes Store, authorise your payment to Apple, and then accept new iTunes licensing terms.

You can then download the iPod Touch upgrade specific to your first or second generation pod.

If you’re looking to save a bit of cash, them maybe this site may be of interest to help with upgrading your Touch without reaching for your Mastercard. But that’s between you and me.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
