Back in January ViewSonic, the well known monitor manufacturer, announced the first model in its new computing line, the VPC100 All-in-One PC. The VPC100 might look like an iMac with a black finish but it is aimed at a completely different market.
Unlike an iMac which comes with a powerful, high speed dual core processor, the VPC100 uses the simpler, less powerful Intel Atom CPU. The reason for this is that the VPC100 is designed for those who want a PC based multimedia center in their living room.
The VPC100 has all the essentials for a multimedia center that can handle video, music and web surfing in the living room, study, bedroom or office. Equipped with the less power hungry Intel Atom processor (running at 1.6GHz), it has 1GB memory, a 160GB hard drive, an 8x DVD, integrated 3 watt stereo speakers and a 1.3 megapixel webcam.
To get things onto your VPC100 there are a whole range of connectivity options including Wifi, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, four high-speed USB 2.0 ports (for your flash drives and other peripherals) and a 4-in-1 card reader (for your digital camera memory card).
The VPC100 All-in-One PC is also very thin. It is just 35mm thick and yet ViewSonic have squeezed in a fully functional PC and it has a 16:9 19″ (18.5″ viewable) LCD display.
As we noted in our post about Windows 7, running Windows Vista on such a machine is unpractical (but Windows 7 Starter should work fine when it comes out in October) and so the VPC100 comes with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
You can get the VPC now Amazon for only £475.00 (with free delivery in the UK). But you might want to be quick, when I looked this morning the site said “only 1 left in stock” but not to worry too much as there are more on the way.
