I’m just old enough to have been young when cassette tapes were popular. I’m sure I’m not the only one who sat next to the radio listening to Dr Fox’s Top 40 and trying to cue the record function after he stopped talking so I could get whatever drivel Take That were pumping out that particular week . My paper round used to be timed perfectly with my mix tape of random crap off the radio and the songs I liked most from ‘The Very Best of Meat Loaf’. (It sounds so twee nowadays when you consider the huge reign of music and video piracy!) I’ve still got a couple of tapes kicking round now. I don’t play them, but they’re not songs I’ve ever had the urge to actually buy on CD or MP3 download (except the Meat Loaf ones…). So what happens now that the world is getting past CD’s and on to playing everything from their computer?
Press record on the U Record Music converter, and that mix tape of love songs that girl in high school gave you can be lovingly transported onto your iPod, ready to impale your heart all over again (aww…). It connects to your music player (be it cassette, mini disc, or turn table) by phono or line in, then into your laptop via USB and viola- dodgy recordings of you singing along with ‘The Lion King’ are ready to go in your iTunes library (or whatever player you prefer). You can then use the free copy of Audacity it comes with to separate out songs, take off any extra bits of talking, and generally even out the flaws in the track. Its a simple plug in and play device, and works with both PC and Mac computers.
I’ve seen these for vinyl before, but this is the first I’ve seen that does cassettes too. It’s just nice to know that no matter how far the technology for playing and making music goes, someone will always give us a way to keep connected to our past. You could just download the tracks and remake someone’s gesture of love- but where’s the romance in that?

Greatest stay soundmen I’ve made it to use a tin hearing as well as appear to not ever hear music of their spare time. It does not stuff what amount gear they have, assuming they never uncover any tune must tone desire, they are a legal responsibility in place of a asset.
