Don’t worry all you fire prone, safety conscious people out there- this is not some renegade ‘no to smoke alarms’ gadget (my Daddy was a Fireman- I’d be shot for publicising something like that!). No this gadget is designed for those of us who have a tendency to burn their food and arms too short to reach the bloomin’ smoke alarm!
Smokey is a cute little character who sits on your fridge (or any magnetic surface in a room you’re likely to make mass amounts of smoke in) He contains an XBee chip which connects wirelessly with your fire alarm (I’m assuming you probably have to have a certain type of fire alarm). He has a timer on his tummy which can be set for a length of time up to an hour, so you can use him as a regular kitchen timer. But then if anything goes wrong, he has a switch hidden in one hand which acts as a remote silencer for your smoke alarm. So you don’t need to balance precariously on a chair to push the button, while leaving your pasta to burn for even longer (yes it IS possible to burn pasta…).
Of course, if your alarm keeps going off you can safely assume that it’s not your cooking that’s the problem. Its the TV having spontaneously combusted…
Smokey was designed by Beth Fuller with elderly or disabled people in mind. It appears to be a concept gadget, but would be useful if it ever did become mass produced. On the other hand, if you’re regularly setting off your smoke alarm with your kitchen catastrophes, the Fire Service recommends investing in a heat detecting alarm- then when it goes off you know it’s because you have a genuine problem. But if you’re after something that looks cute and is a talking point kitchen gadget which could also help save your life (and your back!) then you could do worse.

as someone who frequently used the smoke alarm instead of a timer (I actually have a timer now, totally reformed character!) I think this has it’s uses. Very glad I no longer need one though!
Smokey is too cool! Is he available at Amazon?
I created a page about timers after a group of WAHMs were discussing how much they use (or do not use) timers to get them through the day.

I think he’s just a concept at the moment unfortunately- I wish he were available!
