Sony Ericsson cuts 2000 jobs
More bad news for mobile phone manufacturers I’m afraid, with the announcement that Sony Ericsson are to slash 2000 jobs in an effort to slow 
financial losses. The news comes a day after the world’s largest handset maker, Nokia, reported a 90 per cent fall in profits for the first three months of this year.
Sony Ericsson’s job cut move will save the company 400 million Euros, but won’t do anything to actually improve sales.
The news comes as the company revealed a pre-tax loss of 358m euros (£316m) in this year’s first quarter.
The job cut move won’t square their account books up though, as the company will have to pay around 200 million Euros to newly redundant staff.
Sony Ericsson is the world’s fourth largest mobile phone maker, and had shipped 14.5 million phones between January – March, which is a decrease of 35 per cent compared to this time last year.
Weak consumer confidence, and retailers and distributors both trimming their stock are the reasons for the reduced demand for new handsets.
Both Nokia and Sony Ericsson believe the global handset market will shrink by at least 10 per cent in 2009.
