For anyone who has a car, there is the attached guilt of owning and using a gas guzzler. Practically, we’re not going to give up our modern conveniences, so it’s up to innovation to help us live our lives the way we do now, but with a reduced carbon footprint. 430_total_europe

Enter the Econav. Like any other Sat Nav, this device comes with GPS, speed indicators and traffic alerts. It’s difference is in its ability to help you drive in the most economical and environmentally-friendly way.

The Econav is designed to cut your car’s CO2 emissions by up to 30 per cent, which is an idea not to be sneezed at.

It does this by analysing your various route options and providing you with an eco readout of the potential cost to yourself and the environment on your chosen route.

It will also give you a visual and audio warning to let you know the best time to change gear in order to get the most out of your car at minimal cost to the environment.

How does it know when you should shift? The Econav very cleverly has a database of over 6,000 new-model UK cars, so it can tell you the precise moment you need to switch from second to third gear on a 2008 Ford Mondeo.350_uk

The Econav can be set to one of three levels of sensitivity, depending on how much fuel you want to save, and to ease you into the idea of driving green.

These green gadgets are the product of company, Vexia, and come in four different models:

350UK
350 Total Europe
430UK
430 Total Europe

The 350 series is compact enough to slip neatly into your pocket when you leave your car, which is a nice security feature. The 430 series has a large colour screens and looks the better of the two models.  Both include the following features:

  • Gear change indicator
  • Warning distance
  • Excess speed indicator
  • Optimum speed indicator
  • Maximum road speed
  • Vehicle selection from over 6,000 models
  • Three savings levels
  • Econav Technology
  • UK street maps

All in all, this is a great idea to help us be a little greener without us having to change our lives dramatically. If we’re going to use a Sat Nav anyway, why not choose one that will ensure our kids will be able to drive wherever they want to as well?

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
