Nokia 6208c: 3rd touch screen handset by Nokia targetting the Chinese market

Nokia’s third recent touch screen phone is the 6208c.  This one however, is not a smartphone and running on a variant of the S40 operating system, one could class it as a mid-range/low end device.

The 6208c is primarily targeted at the Chinese market.  It is a stylus operated handset with handwriting recognition.  The touch screen is optimized to write Chinese characters and letters ‘in the most natural way’ and the display is said to be ‘reminiscent of an ink stone – another element from traditional art and culture’.

Now apparently the stylus is inspired by bamboo slips.  It’s an unusual looking stylus, attached to the back of the handset, with the ‘eye’ (what else can I call it?) wrapped around the camera lens.  When I saw it, I thought, ‘oh dear…’  But, each to their own I always say.

If for some reason, the touch screen or handwriting recognition should be slightly unresponsive, the good old keypad is there to save the day.

The phone’s screen is a pretty standard 2.4” (320×240 pixel).

It has a 3.2megapixel camera with duel LED flash and 4x digital zoom.

It features an FM radio, MP3 player and a 3.5mm audio jack, along with games and the usual calculator, calendar and tasks extras.

It has USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, as well as GPRS and Edge.

Talktime is up to 3.5 hours and standby time is around 12 days.

And always a good thing, the handset has a microSD card slot, supporting up to 8GB.  Perfect for lots of pictures, videos and a full library of tunes.

The Nokia 6208c was unveiled in Nanjing, China on December 31st 2008 and is expected to be available, in ‘select markets’, in the first half of 2009.  No word on price as yet, but lacking all the modern features of today’s top mobiles, such as WiFi or even 3G, I can’t imagine that it would cost a fortune… would it?
