Today’s gadgetry is all about combining things to make life easier and more portable. Mobile phones and cameras for example, or indeed mobile phones and the internet. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, many of these fusions involve the mobile phone, so this new gadget is onto a good thing.
The Deus Ex-Machine Watch Mobile is, as the name suggests, a mobile phone in a watch. On first thought, it sounds like an exciting idea as talking into your watch to make a simple phone call would make you look like the James Bond of the office. The Watch Mobile has a touchscreen and built-in stylus so you don’t need to file one of your fingernails down to a point to operate it, therefore preserving your cool exterior.
A design feature I’m not so sure about is the phone keypad, which is on the side of the wrist strap and could make you prone to making accidental calls every time you’re squished on a bus. The Watch Mobile has still and video camera capabilities with special effect options included. This could be handy for capturing moments out with friends although you would have to point your wrist at them “Spider-Man style” to take a snap shot. Let’s be honest, that’s not the best look.
There are two buttons on the face of the Watch Mobile allowing you to switch between the two functions easily. The interface does look quite chunky but if the idea takes off, I’m sure we’ll be seeing slimmed-down designer models in no time.
Unfortunately I remain confused as to the practicalities of actually making and receiving calls on your wristwatch as it’s not clear if you need to keep swinging your wrist from your ear to your mouth to conduct what would be a not-so-private phone call. You can get a headset as an accessory option, which would definitely help when talking to your bank manager.
The Watch Mobile also has an MP3 player, games and Bluetooth support, which really makes this gadget the perfect example of an all-in-one portable device.
