Lord of the rumours, Kevin Rose the founder of Digg.com, has let loose a tweet that will make Facebook look and listen, according to the rumourmonger, he has been informed by a very “credible source,” that Google are planning their own version of Facebook.
We all know that Facebook has grabbed the social networking monopoly, with over 400 million users, more than most countries, reports suggest Google are going to try and take a slice of the cake.
Google is constantly experimenting with new services, including social networks and other forms of communication. Some haven’t been so successful – Buzz never achieved mainstream success due to a privacy scandal and a lack of consumer interest, and Wave failed due to a lack of consumer comprehension – but some, like Google Voice and Google Talk, have done very well.
SFWeekly have had a stab at what Google might have planned and they think that it could be an expansion of Google Profiles, which is a reasonable assumption, Google Profiles gathers information about you from your use of Google services – with some communication and livestream additions, it could turn into a service much like Facebook.
But, of course, this is all rumour and we will just have to wait and see – although we think there is never smoke without fire. So watch this space….
