LG Launches Android Optimus GT540 Smartphone

The LG Optimus is due to hit UK shops this weekend, providing us with yet another Android alternative.

Otherwise known as the GT540, the phone has been developed to be easy to use and is aimed at more of a budget-conscious user.

Boasting a 3-inch touchscreen at 420×320 pixels, the Optimus runs Android 1.6 Donut, which may not be the latest version but will help to keep the price down.

You can take your happy snaps on a 3 megapixel camera, which will produce pics good enough for your Facebook wall.

Speaking of which, the Optimus comes with its own Facebook, Twitter and Bebo app, providing a one-stop shop for status updates.

The handset will also automatically synch all of your Google accounts including your Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and Gtalk settings.

Being an Android phone, you will also get the chance to scour the Android Marketplace for new apps to customise the UI.

Video-wise, the Optimus offers DivX and XviD playback which LG has designed a simple drag and drop interface for.

If you have more movies than Warner Brothers, a MicroSD slot is available and will support cards up to 32GB.

“LG Optimus is the ideal choice for early smartphone users who expect all the features of smartphones without the complexity,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

“This is a device that was designed for regular people who want to jump into the smartphone experience but have been hesitant to do so because of the learning curve," he said.

By making LG Optimus more approachable, we hope more people will give smartphones a try.”

The LG Optimus will be available on 1 May.
