Apple Sells 450,000 iPads; 300,000 on First Day

its first five days on the market Apple has sold 450,000 iPads in the US, shifting a massive 300,000 on the first day.

The figure is similar to the first iPhones sold in the US, which was estimated at 270,000. Although specific iPhone sales figures weren't released at the time, the figure is estimated from Apple's earnings reports.

“We’re making (iPads) as fast as we can,” Mr Jobs said at the recent iPhone OS 4.0 event in California.

“Evidently we can’t make enough of them yet so we are going to have to try harder,” Mr Jobs said.

He said that Apple was currently working hard to produce as many iPads as it can to meet demand, and early signs show that demand is high.

New iPad owners have also downloaded 3.5 million applications to their new device, with a huge demand particularly for eBooks.

“iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad,” Steve Jobs said.

In other impressive stats, Apple has further sold 50 million iPhones and 35 million iPod Touches, totalling a whopping 85.5 million multitouch devices running the iPhone OS and able to access the App Store.

The Apple App store currently has 3500 apps specifically designed for the iPad, out of the total 185,000 apps available.

The desire for Apple's handheld devices has meant that Apple's Safari web browser has a 64 per cent share of the mobile browser market, as it is bundled with the iPhone OS.

  • iPhone 4.0 OS had been released by Apple and it contains multitasking.

Impressive sales, defying those critics who believed it would never live up to the hype. Will it maintain its trajectory though or tail off quickly? This remains to be seen.

iPad sales in the UK should easily mirror those of the US, which should leave many shifting into ‘sell iPod’ mode to upgrade to the iPad. Fortunately there are currently quite a few alternative platforms in the UK for selling an iPod outside of eBay.

I look forward to reading about the success of the iPad with its UK launch.
