Anti-Theft Macbook Sleeves!

You’ve just bought a brand new Mac, be it a Macbook Air or a Macbook Pro with the shiny new Snow Leopard installed. But then disaster strikes and it’s stolen! A few computer case designers believe that this can actually be an effective marketing strategy.

Mitemite’s Newspaper Macbook Sleeve is a computer bag/ sleeve made from Plasticised fabric designed to eliminate computer theft by disguising your Macbook as a newspaper, good idea? The sleeve measures 37.7cm x 27.5 cm x 3.4cm and you can order it masquerading as any of five different newspapers in a selection of languages.

The Mitemite sleeve sells for €60 or roughly £52 plus shipping.

Mitemite however are not the only company in the market. Italian based artisan firm called ItaliaCraft also offer a similar newspaper styled case but this time for the Macbook Air.

This sleeve is made from 0% wool in order to limit static electricity which is important, has black linen back padding and is double stitched with high quality German thread to make it look nothing else other than ACE!

The ItaliaCraft sleeve can also serve as a comfort pad if you wish to put your laptop on your lap (i.e. Laptop). This sleeves price is around £38 plus £4/5 for shipping.

I think this idea could actually work. Old newspaper piles are not interesting at all, and therefore would be the last place a thief would look, especially in a rush. I have a few good stories here and i just think it could work.

However there are bigger potential flaws here, and they stem from it’s biggest asset….looking like newspapers. Imagine if the cleaner comes into your room and sees this old pile of newspapers and then throws them away. There goes your shiny new laptop which is a disaster! And the list could go on and on with potential problems.

So, a good idea really but whether it will actually go on to be a good project remains to be seen. There’s a few other alternatives that could work though like an envolope or a FedEX box or even a pizza box, however the latter might pose a bigger chance of being suspected as actual garbage….hmmm.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
