Motion Controlled TV Remote: Buttons are so Passé
If the success of the Nintendo Wii is anything to go by, there’s a whole world of opportunity for manufacturers looking to promote carpal tunnel syndrome.
The latest household gadget to forgo those annoying rubber buttons for a simple twist of the wrist is the humble TV remote.
This motion sensitive remote control dubbed “Remotion” may look like the nozzle of a desk vacuum cleaner, but it is in fact a device to switch over from Neighbours to the Apprentice.
The device is dead easy to work as you would expect from something with no moving parts. To change the volume, you just need to tilt the remote up for louder, or (you guessed it) down for softer.
For a channel surfing session, the remote needs to be moved left and right.
These functions are obviously pretty basic, and it looks like you’ll need to revert to standing up and actually going over to the TV to change the input source to get a DVD up and running, which is not exactly progress in the couch potato’s world.
As it stands, the Remotion is a bit gimmicky and hasn’t yet mastered the art of actually controlling the different functions a TV remotely. Nice idea though in the interest of not chipping a nail when turning the TV on and off.
