As well as small bug fixes and the odd security update the main purpose of iTunes 8.2 is to add support for iPhones or iPod touches with the iPhone 3.0 Software. The iTunes update is a little under 80MB and shouldn’t be a problem for users with broadband.

This means now that all the pieces are in place for Apple to release the iPhone OS 3.0 software and Apple pundits are expecting the software to be released soon. The Apple Worldwide Developer Conference is less than a week away and it is expected that Apple will officially release the software then.

The iPhone OS 3.0 software adds over 100 features to the iPod or iPhone including:

According to The Unofficial Apple Weblog, who first posted about the iTunes update, Apple has also released updates for QuickTime (now 7.6.2) and GarageBand (update to 5.0.2).

According to the releases notes the QuickTime update “includes changes that increase reliability, improve compatibility and enhance security. This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.”

The GarageBand update “addresses general compatibility issues, improves overall stability, and fixes a number of other minor issues [including] Improved purchasing experience for Artist Lessons in the GarageBand Lesson Store [&] Accessing installed Jam Packs in the loop browser.” The update is required if you purchase lessons from the Lesson Store.
