there’s something about October…) you just know that your cheeks are going to hurt with all of the happy snapping that’s bound to go on. With all of that posing effort, it’s rather worth investing in a camera that will really show off those pearly whites. Sigma have stepped in with good timing, announcing the new Sigma DP2 compact digital camera, to follow on from the success of its previous compact camera, the DP1.
The new model features the mouthful that is a 14 megapixel FOVEON X3 direct image sensor (2,652 × 1,768 × 3 layers) as used in its SD14 and SD15 DSLR cameras. This SLR-sized image sensor is up to twelve times larger than the image sensors used in ordinary compact digital cameras, giving the pocket-sized DP2 the same power as a DSLR.
The DP2 features a 24.2mm f/2.8 lens, which corresponds to a 41mm lens on a 35mm SLR camera. There is even a “Super Multi Layer Coating” on the lens to reduce flare and ghosting.
What is quite handy about this model is the level of versatility that it has. The DP2 features a RAW recording mode to retain full image capture detail at the best quality, but also has a JPEG recording format for those times when convenience outweighs packed pixels. It also provides a 2.5 inch TFT colour LCD monitor
Coming in at the compact size of 113.3×59.5x 54.6mm, the DP2 should be a definite contender for anyone looking to upgrade their current point-and-shoot. No price or UK release dates are out yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
