Review: The Acer Aspire 5920 - A Free Dinner, but at what Cost?

Author: Arutha | Files under Laptops, Reviews

Overview

With the deals on Mobile Internet Dongols going through the roof I thought it was about time I stepped back and did a review on one of these laptops to see exactly what you are actually getting for your virtual ‘buck’. The Acer Aspire 5920 is one of these free laptops on offer from PCWorld when taking up their 3 mobile 24-month contract for £35 a month.

But is it worth the 24-month contract or will this tie you down faster than a deal with the devil himself for a donut? Read on to find out more…

Review

With the new saying “With Vista comes a heavy price”, it seems that this laptop is no exception. Being built with 3GB of RAM this laptop will technically offer you 2GB as its comes with Vista® Home Premium which will use 1GB all on its own as soon as you boot this laptop up for the first time.

Included under its exterior is an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 Processor which runs at a very nice 2 GHz which will be fine for everyday use of programs such as Office, Internet, and MSN etc. However, it may not be as powerful when running design applications at the same time you should bear in mind that this is a laptop and will never be able to render items as fast as a desktop alternative.

Hard drive wise this laptop offers a nice and roomy 160GB so it should offer more than enough space for the average user with hundreds of MP3 files and more than a couple of movie files to boot.

Coming with a 15.4″ CrystalBrite Widescreen Display this laptop offers a higher quality of picture image than most laptops on the market and Acer’s Gemstone Chassis Design, it does complement the screen nicely to give the owner a laptop that overall looks very polished.

For the MSN enthusiasts this laptop comes with a built-in webcam which makes video conversations on the laptop a breeze while offering the person on the other end a clear and clean image of the user.

Apart from the little extra this laptop offers all the standard features you would find in latest laptops which include a DVD drive, wireless as well as a standard video card.

Gaj-IT Verdict

A laptop that will offer the home user a smooth and enjoyable experience, for the more advanced tasks of computing, another laptop might be a worthwhile investment.

Thanks for this review!! My mobile contract is about to run out and I want a mobile with a free laptop. Not too bothered about it being an all singing all dancing one as I have my PC for that, but the Acer Aspire 5920 is one that I’ve been looking at!

    So thanks!

I have actually had one of these for about a year (it came with 2gb RAM back then), it isnt a desktop replacement obviously but its not too shabby as a budget laptop to be used for the everyday tasks.

In case it helps the Vista experience scores are :
    Processor: 4.9
    Memory(Ram): 4.8
    Graphics: 3.4
    Gaming graphics: 3.5
    Hard Disk: 4.8
