A Keyboard that’s all Class…I mean Glass

Author: TazzaHall | Files under Cool Gadgets

While laptops have been becoming smaller, thinner and sleeker, the same can’t be said for PCs and their components. However, just when you thought that all was lost in a world full of chunky, lifeless PC components, let me introduce to you the “No-key keyboard” as the flattest full-sized QWERTY keyboard to date.

The keyboard is made up of a glass surface, a camera and lighting and uses the latest motion capture technology to detect your fingertips on the keys- sorry on the, um, no keys. Obviously this keyboard is all about design. It looks fantastic and is the anti-wrinkle cream for any computer- it will take years off even a Commodore 84.

Practically, I am concerned that the lack of a tactile response from the lack of keys would make typing difficult, but that is if you wanted to type accurately! However, the board responds only to the flat area of your fingertip as it presses on a “non-key” to register that letter. This is designed to prevent you accidentally brushing other letters which could result in you greeting someone by saying “hewllpo”.

On the positive side, this keyboard is waterproof and crumb-proof, allowing companies to better justify workers eating lunch at their desks as their IT department could save a fortune in replacement parts (I say, as I type around a noodle that has been lodged between my “h” and “j” keys for the past month).

The keyboard unfortunately is only at concept stage at the moment, but has already generated a fair amount of interest, which is what every concept needs to take it to the next stage of production. Now all that’s needed is a matching mouse that could get mistaken for a glass coaster!
