With December 25 coming ever closer in your diary, it’s not too early to start thinking about what to place under the tree, and no gift is more handy around family get-together time as a brand new camera to capture all of the happy (read: drunken) moments together.

If Aunt Maud is in need of a camera upgrade, this is the guide for you. We’re taking a snapshot of the Top Ten digital cameras on the market that will produce a great picture.

We’ve covered a range of price-ranges to make sure you get the camera you want but still have some pennies left over to buy Uncle Bill’s pressie as well.

So get the siblings together and chip in for one of these stocking fillers.

Fujifilm FinePix Z90
RRP: £129.99
Specs: 14 megapixels, 5x optical zoom
Key Feature: Upload pics straight to Facebook

Featuring a large touchscreen on the back, the Fujifilm FinePix Z90 will appeal to anyone not wanting to squint at tiny symbols to change picture settings. For the younger generation, this camera has the ability to upload pics directly to Facebook or YouTube.

The camera comes in six different colours so will quickly become a fashion accessory in your handbag. Tech-wise, the camera offers digital image stabilisation to prevent blurry action shots, and you can also touch-up pictures without having to download them to your computer first.

This is a great all-rounder camera that looks great and won’t break the bank.

Kodak EasyShare M575
RRP: £90
Specs: 14 megapixels, 5x optical zoom
Key Feature: Easy to use, great pics

For a camera that won’t break the bank but will still take a good picture of it, the Kodak EasyShare M575 is a great option. It’s easy to use with its default “Smart Capture” mode which just means you can push the button and the camera will take care of everything else. In doing so, this camera provides quite impressive pictures considering its budget price tag.

Available in red, green and black (all metallic), the EasyShare M575 is perfectly themed for Christmas. There is also a video record function that will let you film High Def up to 720p, which isn’t top of the market but is definitely decent. Unfortunately you can’t zoom while filming your latest Spielberg moment with this camera.

The Kodak EasyShare M575 is a stocking stuffer that beats a pair of socks.

Nikon Coolpix L120
RRP: £249.99
Specs: 14 megapixels, 21x optical zoom
Key Feature: Extreme zoom capability

For something that looks a bit more serious at a relatively affordable price, the Nikon Coolpix L120 provides easy-to-use functionality in a serious camera casing. With an impressive 21x optical zoom, the Coolpix L120 will ace that hard-to-get-to shot. The camera also features a Vibration Reduction lens which provides an additional 4x digital zoom.

Seventeen dedicated scene modes will keep those with a basic understanding of photography happy, or there is also an easy to use auto function for those who prefer to point and click.

For the budding photographer, the Coolpix L120’s super zoom ability is bound to impress.

Canon PowerShot A800
RRP: £70
Specs: 10 megapixels, 3x optical zoom
Key Feature: Best cheap camera on the market

For a basic, no bells and whistles point and shoot, the Canon PowerShot A800 is hard to go past. It doesn’t have the best specs in the world with video resolution of 480p and limited zoom, but it does take surprisingly good photos and really represents value for money.

The PowerShot A800 is also good for travellers as it takes 2 AA batteries (remember them?) instead of having to be charged at a strange-looking international powerpoint. While it won’t max out your credit card, it doesn’t look cheap as it’s available in 4 metallic colours with a silver lens housing. There is no image stabiliser but there is face detect which goes a long way to helping you take great family portrait snaps.

At a bargain basement price the Canon PowerShot A800 punches well above its weight.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3
RRP: £369.99
Specs: 12 megapixels, waterproof to 12m, shockproof to 2m, freeze-proof to -10° C, dust-proof
Key Feature: Will go to Everest with you

This camera is for the extreme adventurer in your life. It looks like a rugged piece of work because it is. With its own GPS system, the Lumix DMC-FT3 will make sure you never get lost in the Alps. It also packs a compass, altimeter and a barometer which will also read underwater depth. While you pay a bit more for this camera, you will get your money’s worth in terms of extra features.

The Lumix DMC-FT3 comes with full 1920×1080 HD video recording so your scuba diving movies will turn out a treat. There is also the now standard face detection focus as well as AF tracking and spot focusing.

For a tough camera to take on a snorkel adventure, the Lumix DMC-FT3 is exactly what you need in your wetsuit pocket.

Pentax Optio RS1500
RRP: £80
Specs: 14 megapixels, 4x optical zoom
Key Feature: Batman (or if you like, changeable skins)

The first thing you may notice about this camera is Superman. With a range of changeable skins, the Pentax Optio RS1500 can be personalised to express almost any personality. You can either choose from Pentax’s DC Comic range of skins, or pop on over to the Pentax site and upload images to create your own skin.

For a sub-£100 camera, the Optio RS1500 really does pack in the tech with video recording to 720p and advanced automatic features, such as automatic tracking and face detection. There are night, sport and portrait capture modes and also one for taking pictures of text documents, which might come in handy for the student in the family.

For someone’s first grown-up camera the Pentax Optio RS1500 is fun and will capture growing-up years in surprisingly good quality.

Samsung ST6500
RRP: £150
Specs: 16 megapixels, 5x optical zoom
Key Feature: A designer’s camera

This camera looks stylish with a wavy finish on top and large touchscreen on the back which lets you change settings by tapping of large icons. Its slim design also means that this snapper will fit snugly in your pocket or even the smallest of handbags.

The Samsung ST6500 comes with plenty of artistic filters and setting to keep any creative entertained. You can “vignette” or “object highlight” your pics with ease before loading your artistic endeavours to Facebook. The standard picture quality is good too considering the price, with a hybrid image stabilisation that uses both optical and digital anti-shake techniques.

For a design camera with artistic photo features, the Samsung ST6500 is hard to top.

Casio Exilim EX-H15
RRP: £180
Specs: 14 megapixels, 10x optical zoom
Key Feature: Great zoom in a compact case

This compact camera packs a wicked 10x optical zoom. Combined with 720p HD video recording capability and an excellent battery life, the Casio Exilim EX-H15 makes it worth the extra few pounds for a performance digital camera.

The camera’s big screen isn’t touch-responsive but there aren’t many buttons to play with. You can access most of the camera’s features through an easy-to-use on-screen menu and five-way pad system. One thing this camera lacks is an HDMI output, and video recording is limited to 29 minutes, but for most people that’s more than enough to claim their two minutes of fame on YouTube.

It’s pretty in pastels to match any clutch purse but it does feel a bit chunky in your hand, while you use it to take quality pics up close and personal.

Fujifilm Finepix X100
RRP: £999
Specs: 12 megapixels, 35mm fixed focal length
Key Feature: Manual control for the photo aficionado

For a super-stylish retro camera, the Fujifilm Finepix X100 will take you back to the days when photography was a real artform. This camera is unique with its extensive set of manual controls, uilt-in lens filters, a large DSLR-size sensor sans the bulky camera casing and a bright F2.0 aperture lens.

What you don’t get for your high-end £999 is optical zoom. The Finepix X100 does however provide a lens and sensor combo that is tailor made for each other with very fast power-on-to-first-shot time and no distortion that you can get with many other wide-angle, long-zoom lenses.

For its old-style charms this camera still shoots 720p HD video, and has been one of the most exciting cameras to have been released in 2011.

Samsung EX1
RRP: £399.99
Specs: 10 megapixels, 3x optical zoom
Key Feature: Full manual mode in a compact package

While the zoom on this camera isn’t exactly telescopic, the Samsung EX1 packs a large sensor, f/1.8 lens and a maximum ISO 3200 which is not to be blinked at. That’s a lot of camera speak for this camera can take pretty much any photo you want.

The Samsung EX1 has a full manual mode, HDR capability, can capture files in RAW and comes with a good range of filters to get your artistic side excited. If all of that is somewhat meaningless for you, the camera also comes with a fully automatic mode so that it does all the hard work for you.

This camera takes great low-light photos, making it perfect for capturing those embarrassing moments at the pub.

Despite the fact that Samsung has its own mobile operating system, rumors are abound that the Korean company is looking to acquire WebOS from HP. However, if other rumors are to be believed, then the company is also aiming for the PC operations of HP. But, we can count this one out as HP has clarified that it intends to keep its PC business.

According to DigiTimes, Samsung is willing to acquire WebOS to compete against iOS and Android. Apparently, Samsung is looking for an Android alternative after Google’s acquisition of Motorola. At the very same time, even Korean government seems to be all that happy with Android. Apparently, it has told Samsung and LG to reduce their reliance on Android. Korean deputy commerce minister also expressed his hope that the two companies would be able to come up with a viable alternative to Android.

Already plagued with patent lawsuits, Android licensees are not too happy with Google’s purchase of Motorola. With this acquisition, Google is now directly competing with its Android licensees. But at the very same time, companies like Samsung and HTC largely owe their success in smartphone segment to the adoption of Android operating system. According to industry experts, Samsung is likely to suffer if it decides to drop Android platform and go solo. Samsung manufactures phones for both Android and its home grown operating system Bada.

This week brought lots of new launches, some hotly anticipated, some not so much. Samsung Galaxy II is certainly in the first category though. Vodafone has brought Galaxy II to the market and it is available for free with a two year contract. Though, you will need to pay £40 per month for enjoying the power of this Android Gingerbread sporting phone. This monthly plan will cover you for 900 minutes of talk time and 750 MB worth of data.

Samsung Galaxy II is one of most talked about phones, but still, if you are somehow not aware of its specifications, then here they are for you. The phone sports generous 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen and comes packed with 1.2 GHz dual core processor. With mere 8.49 mm thickness, the phone wouldn’t be heavy on your pocket despite its spacious screen.

O2 and Three are already offering the phone, but if you are on Vodafone network, then your time has arrived. Vodafone offers various rental plans, but it still does not beat O2 packages, which start from £13.50 with 24 months contract. Vodafone, on the other hand, is offering £25 per month contract plan, but you will need to pay £300 up front. However, with this plan, your monthly free talk time quota would be restricted to mere 100 minutes and the data usage will be limited to 500 MB.

You can head over to shop.vodafone.co.uk for further details about the various options available.

After conquering mobile OS market, Google is now looking to take over computer Operating System market. With its new laptop range, it is not only promoting its new Chrome operating system, but is also planning to make cloud computing main stream. Though, at present, the success of this strategy seems a bit iffy, but with this attempt, Google is now facing Microsoft on the Redmond company’s home turf.

In the beginning, Google is going to collaborate with Samsung and Acer for manufacturing the hardware. The laptops will come pre-installed with Chrome operating system and will be integrated with Google’s cloud services. Since, all the information is going to be stored online, the units are likely to come without any hard drive.

As with any other Google’s product or service, even this new offering is designed to make users’ life better. Yea, if Google could have its way, it would have made us believe how its gathering of personal data without users’ consent is actually for the users’ benefit only!

Anyhow, Sergey Brin has claimed that regular PCs are maintenance intensive since you need to install softwares, antivirus, updates, so and so forth. According to him, Chromebook will change the way you use your computer as now your data resides on a cloud and hence you do not need to worry about the maintenance. He goes on to claim that data stored on a cloud is safer than the one stored on your local drive. Fine, we are just going to erase the various recent memories of Amazon outage and Sony security breach and believe what the Google Co-founder says.

Samsung will retail its notebook series with a base price of $429, whereas Acer series will start from $349 onwards. While Google would not get anything out of this retail price, it will get its cut from monthly subscription of $28 per month. This rate is applicable to corporate clients, whereas government and educational institutions will have to shell out $20 per month. So, essentially, your hard-drive less laptop will cost you about $1149, if you choose a base Samsung model with three year service plan.

Since, this laptop needs internet for its survival, Google has tied up with Verizon, which will provide free internet access for up to 100 MBs of data per month. Whoa, full 100 MB of data for one month, Google and Verizon are so generous. On the face of it, the deal does not look very attractive for retail customers, but Google is aiming at corporate clients. So, what is your view about this new innovation from Google Land?

So as you start to plan your weekend away, whether it is camping or a weekend break in Barcelona, one thing that should not be forgotten is your trusty camera. If you’re looking for an affordable digital camera which is going to capture those holiday moments then take a look at the Samsung ES71 Digital Camera.

It comes packed with adequate imaging credentials such as a 27mm wide angle lens and 5x optical zoom, however the clincher is the 12.2 megapixel camera and the face detection function. With face detection you are able to distinguish faces from the rest of the background and focus on them. It will even adjust the brightness of the faces so that you will get the perfect picture to share with your friends and family when you get back.

However, the thing that caught my attention was the price. Originally the camera would set you back £119.99, however with Amazon you save 50% and now the camera is selling for only £59.99.

Now don’t expect to get fantastic quality pictures which you would expect from an SLR, however if you’re looking for an affordable camera on the go then the Samsung ES71 is definitely the one for you.

T-Mobile US has announced its pricing for Dell Streak 7 and with the official update the company has also debunked the rumors which had claimed that T-Mobile would be pricing the 7 inch tablet at $330. The official pricing for the tablet is $199.99, which will shackle you with a two year contract with the carrier. If you want to have your tablet unrestricted, then you will have to shell out $450. The tablet will be available for purchase from T-Mobile from February 2nd.

At 7 inches, Dell Streak 7 does not seem to be suffering from the identity crisis which plagued its 5-inch cousin, the original Dell Streak. Streak 7 features an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and Android version 2.2. Its 7 inches touchscreen display has a resolution of 800×480 pixels. Other than that, the tablet has a 5MP rear facing camera whereas its front facing camera has 1.3MP resolution. The pricing seems to be reasonable, given the fact that Samsung Galaxy Tab will set you back by $500, if bought off contract. However, the tablet has got more bells and whistles than Streak. So, which one would you opt for?

Earlier, the company had started accepting pre-orders for the “iPod-killer” in France, and now Android-running media player has made appearance on Amazon UK. The player has been listed at £150 for 5GB version, whereas for 16GB, you will have to shell out £180. The tentative release date has been set at January 7.

The player is likely to be placed as a direct competitor to Apple’s iPod Touch. The player runs on solid Android 2.2 or Froyo OS and has access to the Market. Galaxy Media Player will also have 1 GHz processor. The player will also feature a bigger screen of 4 inches, although it will be Clear LCD instead of AMOLED. With dual cameras, the player may pose a stiff competition to iPod Touch. Its rear camera has a healthy 3.2 megapixel resolution. So, do these stats impress you?

The camera is extremely easy-to-use; it’s intuitive i-Function Lens will help you achieve high quality images even if you are holding a camera for the first time in your life.

The camera’s built-in i-Scene lens-priority mode automatically recognises what type of lens has been attached and suggests which kind of scenery the lens is best suited for. Values and parameter settings like ISO shutter speed and aperture are effortless to control. In fact it’s so easy, that you can access them without putting the camera down whilst keeping your eyes on the subject.

The Auto Focus will allow you to catch amazing shots in breathtaking detail. The NX100 sports an impressive, 3-inch AMOLED screen that’s impressively bright and clear. Other features include dynamic range expansion, 14 scene modes, raw and JPEG capture to an SD or SDHC card (up to 32GB), and 720p video capture at 30 frames per second. The lens-shift image stabilisation will be a real support for those with shaky hands and the ‘photo style selector’ function will help you to adjust a perfect colour temperature of your object.

Priced at a reasonable £450 this camera is a great investment to capture those important moments in your life.

The Samsung Continuum (pictured above) has been unveiled. (The pictues huge because when its shrunken down you can’t get a good idea of the screens brightness/clarity.)

Samsung’s latest handset is to be sold alongside the Galaxy S and will initially be available exclusively on Verizon Wireless.

The device is similar to the Galaxy S and it shares a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen.

To complement the Super AMOLED is DLNA compatibility which allows it to quickly connect with TVs and other devices with DLNA capabilities.

The smartphone also comes with a secondary, 1.8-inch, Super AMOLED display. The “ticker” display is used to display information ranging from incoming calls to status messages. It’s touch capable and, when the primary screen is being actively used, incoming messages are routed to it, so the primary activity isn’t interrupted.

There’s the plus so now for its bad point, it will ship with Android 2.1. It’s not the end of the world, but if you’re buying a brand new top-of-the-range smartphone you’d expect it to have the latest OS. Samsung has assured it will be updated rapidly and my guess would be that it will jump straight to 2.3 (Gingerbread.)

Samsung has extended its H-series camcorder range to include a whopping four new camcorders: the HMX-H200, HMX-203, HMX-H204, and HMX-205.

Each camcorder can record in full high-definition (1920 x 1080 pixels) in H.264 format.

The new H-Series four also come with Samsung’s new BSI CMOS imaging sensor, which works wonders in low light conditions. Samsung says that its sensors absorb more light than regular Charge Couple Devices (CCDs), which is Sony’s trademark technology.

To get up and close, all four camcorders have 20x optical zoom with a 37mm wide angle lens.

There is optical image stabilisation as well, with a time lapse mode, however this only works at 720 pixels.

Your Spielberg-esque movies can be viewed on the 2.7 inch touchscreen, or can be connected to your telly using HDMI.

So what makes each camcorder stand out from each other? It all comes down to memory, with the H205 boasting a 32GB SSD, the H204 packing 16GB and the H203 with just 8GB.

The poor H200 has no onboard storage, but all cameras can be expanded through SD cards.

As expected, all models take still images at an ok 4.7 pixels.

Battery life on each camcorder is at the 2hour mark, which doesn’t sound like much, but remember you’re making a full HD video. It will extend longer if shooting at a lower res.

Samsung Digital Division General Marketing Manager, Steve Mitchell, said that the new additions to the family were aimed at making new technology more affordable.

“Consumers want the ability to capture family events – birthday parties, football games, graduations, and more – with the utmost detail and clarity, but full HD video recording has come at a price premium in the past,” he said.

“Samsung’s H-Series camcorders give consumers the ability to capture life in full HD with a wealth of functionality, features, and performance, all at an affordable price.”

The new range will reach the UK in June this year.
