CES is in full swing and today we’ll give you some interesting details on origami laptops, tablets, 4K camcorders and even an Apple rumour.

Right, let’s get this Apple iPad rumour out of the way first. Now, everyone knows that Apple isn’t at CES (or are they?). Well, according to iLounge they’ve seen something interesting from Apple at CES.

The iPad 3. Now before you start the obligatory trolling, let’s just give them a chance. First of all there’s no picture. Ok….. But there’s the testimony of someone who has seen it and works for a reputable publication: iLounge.

Jeremy Horwitz, has been shown what he was a told is the new iPad. What does it looks like? Well, the iPad 2. According to Horwitz, if you had them side-by-side then you’d struggle to tell them apart. The only visual difference was that it’s a tiny bit thicker: 1mm. According the whistleblowers the design changes are more akin to the changes we saw in the iPhone 4 to 4S. Basically none.

The main talking point about the rumour is the screen. Although iLounge didn’t get to see it working (we know) the new iPad has indeed got a Retina display. According to Horwitz and his manufacturing sources they reckon the new tablet will be with us within 2 months under the name iPad 2S or iPad 2HD.

It’s not the first time new tech is shown off behind closed doors, remember the time Reuters saw the iPad 2 at The Daily Launch?

We’d say file this under: just maybe.

Now, for the tech announcements that actually did happen – remember the 4K screen’s that we’ve been talking about over the last week or so. Well, we made a caveat that we’d be interested to know what content they’d show off on these new TV’s as we weren’t aware of any film footage in this mind-bogglingly high resolution.

Well, that’s not true: JVC has announced a new camcorder, called GY-HMQ10, which offers recording at 3840×2160 at 24 or 50p. Even more exciting is the fairly reasonable £4340 price tag and the promised UK release of March. This is a professional offering and is sure to future proof yourself for an expected move to 4K content in the next 18-24 months.

For the technical of you, the new camera is powered by HVC’s Falconbrid large-scale integration (LSI) chip, which has a half-inch CMOS imager with an impressive 8.3 million active pixels.

Product manager, Gustav Emrich. “We’re witnessing the birth of what is destined to become a broad market for full 4K end-to-end production. The GY-HMQ10 is a breakthrough product that opens up 4K imaging to users who previously wouldn’t have considered it.”

JVC explains that the big problem with 4K for video is processing power, but that this is now shifting.

“There just hasn’t been the ability to capture, process, display and record full 4K images in real time until now,” adds JVC.

Lenovo has been incredibly busy at this year’s CES with plenty of smart TV’s and laptops, but, the device that caught our eye is their up-and-coming IdeaPad Yoga. Admittedly it’s not the greatest name, but, just look at it.

It’s a Windows 8 laptop than can also double up as a tablet in a similar vein as Asus’ Transformer, which saw impressive reviews and sales last year.

The current trend of latops sharing design cues from tablets is something we’ll see a lot of in 2012. So expect everything to get thinner and lighter. Essentially Yoga is an Ultrabook laptop that’s as gorgeous as a MacBook Air, but also doubles as a impressive tablet.

The hybrid laptop comes with a 13.3-inch screen and has 10-finger touch capabilities. Although, we fear that it might just be to heavy to use as an every-day tablet as it weighs twice as much as an iPad 2.

Lenovo expects the IdeaPad Yoga to ship when Windows 8 is available commercially, which should be in the third or fourth quarter of this year. The company expects the device to run for less than $1,200.

Razer’s newly announced prototype tablet is getting a lot of coverage and when you first set your eye’s on it you can see why.

Gaming on tablets can be cumbersome and fiddly. Anyone who has played GTA3 on iPad or Android will testify to this. At the moment Apple isn’t making any plans to make a games controller for their tablet, so it’s up to companies like Razer to show them where there are going wrong.

Hydra controllers connected up to a PC gaming tablet certainly appeals to us – especially with some impressive suggested specs. They’ve included an impressive workhorse in the form of a Intel Core i7 processor, and a 1280×800 display. Now you’d look quite the wholly if you popped this out on your daily commute to work. But gaming on tablets is big business, Angry Birds is proof of this, but so far we’re yet to see a hardcore game really find a home on tablets – could this be the answer?

There are also magnetometer and accelerometers thrown in to take advantage of its mobility.

“Adapted from a full featured PC gamepad, Project Fiona’s integrated dual controllers coupled with its advanced multi-touch screen are designed to make complex game navigation ergonomic and intuitive without compromising on the portability of the tablet,” states Razer.

“You’ll be able to carry out headshots and command troops in-game with ease. This first-of-its-kind PC gaming tablet with integrated dual controllers is definitely not for playing casual games about unhappy birds or zombie-killing flora.”

It’s only a prototype, but it’s good see companies trying to marry tablets and gaming in a perfect match for each other without have to dumb down today’s complex triple-A titles.

More CES news tomorrow.

Sony PlayStation Vita is up for grabs in Japan and as expected, the gaming console’s pre-orders sold out within a short period of time. Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, said: “I’m pretty confident… that there will not be major challenges in meeting demand, even though there may be short-term.” We hope that the company’s optimistic projections prove to be correct as Sony is looking to announce its fourth consecutive annual loss.

Sony also launched a digital user manual for the console. The manual provides details about user accounts, tech specs and trophies. While the console would not be available in the European markets until next year, you can go ahead and devour the digital manual as it is available in English as well. The company has limited each console to one account, so the memory cards used are not exchangeable. If you want to use your console for a different account, you will need to erase all of your details and bring the console back to factory settings. This feature is expected to be one of the main downsides for a otherwise great console.

Contrary to expectations, the console does not support 1080p HD playback, so you can play your videos in a standard resolution. However, the console is able to support 18 languages and offer customizable dictionary and predictive typing.

PlayStation Vita is expected to hit European and US markets in February next year.

With December 25 coming ever closer in your diary, it’s not too early to start thinking about what to place under the tree, and no gift is more handy around family get-together time as a brand new camera to capture all of the happy (read: drunken) moments together.

If Aunt Maud is in need of a camera upgrade, this is the guide for you. We’re taking a snapshot of the Top Ten digital cameras on the market that will produce a great picture.

We’ve covered a range of price-ranges to make sure you get the camera you want but still have some pennies left over to buy Uncle Bill’s pressie as well.

So get the siblings together and chip in for one of these stocking fillers.

Fujifilm FinePix Z90
RRP: £129.99
Specs: 14 megapixels, 5x optical zoom
Key Feature: Upload pics straight to Facebook

Featuring a large touchscreen on the back, the Fujifilm FinePix Z90 will appeal to anyone not wanting to squint at tiny symbols to change picture settings. For the younger generation, this camera has the ability to upload pics directly to Facebook or YouTube.

The camera comes in six different colours so will quickly become a fashion accessory in your handbag. Tech-wise, the camera offers digital image stabilisation to prevent blurry action shots, and you can also touch-up pictures without having to download them to your computer first.

This is a great all-rounder camera that looks great and won’t break the bank.

Kodak EasyShare M575
RRP: £90
Specs: 14 megapixels, 5x optical zoom
Key Feature: Easy to use, great pics

For a camera that won’t break the bank but will still take a good picture of it, the Kodak EasyShare M575 is a great option. It’s easy to use with its default “Smart Capture” mode which just means you can push the button and the camera will take care of everything else. In doing so, this camera provides quite impressive pictures considering its budget price tag.

Available in red, green and black (all metallic), the EasyShare M575 is perfectly themed for Christmas. There is also a video record function that will let you film High Def up to 720p, which isn’t top of the market but is definitely decent. Unfortunately you can’t zoom while filming your latest Spielberg moment with this camera.

The Kodak EasyShare M575 is a stocking stuffer that beats a pair of socks.

Nikon Coolpix L120
RRP: £249.99
Specs: 14 megapixels, 21x optical zoom
Key Feature: Extreme zoom capability

For something that looks a bit more serious at a relatively affordable price, the Nikon Coolpix L120 provides easy-to-use functionality in a serious camera casing. With an impressive 21x optical zoom, the Coolpix L120 will ace that hard-to-get-to shot. The camera also features a Vibration Reduction lens which provides an additional 4x digital zoom.

Seventeen dedicated scene modes will keep those with a basic understanding of photography happy, or there is also an easy to use auto function for those who prefer to point and click.

For the budding photographer, the Coolpix L120’s super zoom ability is bound to impress.

Canon PowerShot A800
RRP: £70
Specs: 10 megapixels, 3x optical zoom
Key Feature: Best cheap camera on the market

For a basic, no bells and whistles point and shoot, the Canon PowerShot A800 is hard to go past. It doesn’t have the best specs in the world with video resolution of 480p and limited zoom, but it does take surprisingly good photos and really represents value for money.

The PowerShot A800 is also good for travellers as it takes 2 AA batteries (remember them?) instead of having to be charged at a strange-looking international powerpoint. While it won’t max out your credit card, it doesn’t look cheap as it’s available in 4 metallic colours with a silver lens housing. There is no image stabiliser but there is face detect which goes a long way to helping you take great family portrait snaps.

At a bargain basement price the Canon PowerShot A800 punches well above its weight.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3
RRP: £369.99
Specs: 12 megapixels, waterproof to 12m, shockproof to 2m, freeze-proof to -10° C, dust-proof
Key Feature: Will go to Everest with you

This camera is for the extreme adventurer in your life. It looks like a rugged piece of work because it is.

Samsung ST6500
RRP: £150
Specs: 16 megapixels, 5x optical zoom
Key Feature: A designer’s camera

This camera looks stylish with a wavy finish on top and large touchscreen on the back which lets you change settings by tapping of large icons. Its slim design also means that this snapper will fit snugly in your pocket or even the smallest of handbags.

The Samsung ST6500 comes with plenty of artistic filters and setting to keep any creative entertained. You can “vignette” or “object highlight” your pics with ease before loading your artistic endeavours to Facebook. The standard picture quality is good too considering the price, with a hybrid image stabilisation that uses both optical and digital anti-shake techniques.

For a design camera with artistic photo features, the Samsung ST6500 is hard to top.

Casio Exilim EX-H15
RRP: £180
Specs: 14 megapixels, 10x optical zoom
Key Feature: Great zoom in a compact case

This compact camera packs a wicked 10x optical zoom. Combined with 720p HD video recording capability and an excellent battery life, the Casio Exilim EX-H15 makes it worth the extra few pounds for a performance digital camera.

The camera’s big screen isn’t touch-responsive but there aren’t many buttons to play with. You can access most of the camera’s features through an easy-to-use on-screen menu and five-way pad system. One thing this camera lacks is an HDMI output, and video recording is limited to 29 minutes, but for most people that’s more than enough to claim their two minutes of fame on YouTube.

It’s pretty in pastels to match any clutch purse but it does feel a bit chunky in your hand, while you use it to take quality pics up close and personal.

Fujifilm Finepix X100
RRP: £999
Specs: 12 megapixels, 35mm fixed focal length
Key Feature: Manual control for the photo aficionado

For a super-stylish retro camera, the Fujifilm Finepix X100 will take you back to the days when photography was a real artform. This camera is unique with its extensive set of manual controls, uilt-in lens filters, a large DSLR-size sensor sans the bulky camera casing and a bright F2.0 aperture lens.

What you don’t get for your high-end £999 is optical zoom. The Finepix X100 does however provide a lens and sensor combo that is tailor made for each other with very fast power-on-to-first-shot time and no distortion that you can get with many other wide-angle, long-zoom lenses.

For its old-style charms this camera still shoots 720p HD video, and has been one of the most exciting cameras to have been released in 2011.

Samsung EX1
RRP: £399.99
Specs: 10 megapixels, 3x optical zoom
Key Feature: Full manual mode in a compact package

While the zoom on this camera isn’t exactly telescopic, the Samsung EX1 packs a large sensor, f/1.8 lens and a maximum ISO 3200 which is not to be blinked at. That’s a lot of camera speak for this camera can take pretty much any photo you want.

The Samsung EX1 has a full manual mode, HDR capability, can capture files in RAW and comes with a good range of filters to get your artistic side excited. If all of that is somewhat meaningless for you, the camera also comes with a fully automatic mode so that it does all the hard work for you.

This camera takes great low-light photos, making it perfect for capturing those embarrassing moments at the pub.

Despite the fact that Samsung has its own mobile operating system, rumors are abound that the Korean company is looking to acquire WebOS from HP. However, if other rumors are to be believed, then the company is also aiming for the PC operations of HP. But, we can count this one out as HP has clarified that it intends to keep its PC business.

According to DigiTimes, Samsung is willing to acquire WebOS to compete against iOS and Android. Apparently, Samsung is looking for an Android alternative after Google’s acquisition of Motorola. At the very same time, even Korean government seems to be all that happy with Android. Apparently, it has told Samsung and LG to reduce their reliance on Android. Korean deputy commerce minister also expressed his hope that the two companies would be able to come up with a viable alternative to Android.

Already plagued with patent lawsuits, Android licensees are not too happy with Google’s purchase of Motorola. With this acquisition, Google is now directly competing with its Android licensees. But at the very same time, companies like Samsung and HTC largely owe their success in smartphone segment to the adoption of Android operating system. According to industry experts, Samsung is likely to suffer if it decides to drop Android platform and go solo. Samsung manufactures phones for both Android and its home grown operating system Bada.

Social Networking space is getting crowded, but that would not deter all the Johnny Come Lately. Sony would be launching its new gaming console with at least four add-ons. The company has already signed pacts with Facebook, Skype, Twitter and Foursquare. Sony made this announcement during a press conference held in Cologne. Sony also announced some new features of Vita including its 3G capabilities. With the new features, Vita has further blurred the distinction between a game console and phone. Though, Sony left a few questions unanswered as well. It is not known whether 3G connection would be required for using Facebook and Twitter integration. The company also refrained from showing the UI of the machine. Sony already has its social microcosm which covers its various systems. This includes friends list and intra-system voice chat function. It is not known how these features would be integrated with new additions. Sony would be launching its new offering in 2012 in the overseas market, though in Japan it is likely to be introduced this holiday season. The console will come with shiny OLED touchscreen. Sony further confirmed that all Vita games will be available in downloadable format. Though, this will lead to the risk of running out of space, since most of these games are expected to be major space hogs. In the meantime, Sony has dropped the price of PS3.

The Kindle has established itself as a household name and is the darling of students, academics and book-lovers across the globe who appreciate the lightened load of a library full of books to a slab of plastic.

The Android running Nook is another E-reader that most people have heard of. But you may not know that before the two big players emerged Sony already had their hands in the E-reader market. But unfortunately for them, nobody has heard of a Sony E-reader.

But could that all change? Sony has decided to up their game and establish themselves as a leading company in the E-reader market. According to rumours, two brand new Sony eReaders could be released in August.

Apparently the eReaders will come in two separate models with prices set at $180 (£112) and $300 (£186) Both will come with new Sony software, WiFi.

But will Sony bring enough to the table to scare the dominant Kindle?

LulzSec, a hacking group, which rose to infamy, thanks to its various breaching attempts which showed how vulnerable our major companies and government websites are, has announced that it will be disbanding itself. In the recent past, the group had been responsible for attacks on the CIA and Sony Corp. websites. In its parting notes, the group said that it has accomplished its aim of disrupting the status quo “for entertainment”. Oh well, “the entertainment” proved to be very expensive for the victims. Ask Sony Corp.!

Though, the wannabe pirates are claiming that they are disbanding as they have accomplished their goals. But the things are not that simple. Cyberworld may seem like a robotic place but it is still populated and governed by human beings and their amorphous instincts. Recently, there had been rumors that LulzSec not only messed up with corporations and governments, but also managed to sour its relationship with other underground hacking groups. One competing hacking group even went ahead and published the names of LulzSec members.

Apart from this, the government also revved up its quest against the group and arrested a 19 year old, suspected to be the mastermind behind the group. With some high profile heists, the group is already a target of envy from its rival gangs. However, some of the hacking groups have also alleged that LulzSec lacks direction and thus is going haywire.

While there are not many people empathizing with the hacking group and we are pretty sure not many tears would be shed at the news of its demise, but the group at least showed the loopholes in internet and online security. Now, that every company and their grandma is jumping on the Cloud Computing bandwagon, the issue becomes even more important.

Sony’s PlayStation is back on its feet but the company would feel the pinch of the breach for a long time. The breach has been estimated to cost the company to the tune of a couple of hundred million dollars. This cost includes lost revenue, lost credibility and the cost of ‘welcome back’ measures. However, Sony is facing another kind of fallout too. The company is now grappling with lawsuits instituted against it for failing to protect its customers’ sensitive data.

In a recently filed class action lawsuit, three men have claimed that the breach was caused by some laid-off security employees of the Japanese company. The suit also alleges that the company was complacent about fortifying its security measures despite knowing that its security system was flawed. The suit, which has been filed in the San Diego US District Court, states that only two weeks before the breach, the company had pink-slipped a large number of security employees.

The suit also accuses Sony of adopting discriminatory policies. It says that while the company was lavish in spending money over its own server security, it was lax when it came to securing customers’ data. The suit stated, “Sony took numerous precautions and spent lavishly to secure its proprietary development server containing its own sensitive information … but recklessly declined to provide adequate protections for its Customers’ Personal Information.” It looks like Sony’s Welcome Back program is not yielding the expected results.
