Apple is now focusing its attention on burgeoning Chinese markets and it seems like that the company is on its way to take the top spot in the emerging market. According to Morgan Stanley, Apple is likely to boost up its efforts in China in next year. It is expected to collaborate with major carriers such as China Mobile and China Telecom. This would ensure that Apple phones are available on all the three major carriers in China. With these new tie ups, Apple is looking to increase its sales volume to 40 million units.

Apple is currently offering iPhone in China through China Unicom, which is second largest telecom carrier in China. However, with this tie up, Apple can access only about 15 million “high end Chinese subscribers’. The country is estimated to have about 150 million such high end subscribers. China Mobile, which is the country’s largest carrier company, manages about 120 million such consumers. Remaining 15 million subscribers are with China Telecom, which holds the third spot in Chinese telecom market.

Morgan Stanley also believes that the next iPhone will come with 4G capabilities. While 4G is fast becoming the norm, Apple has so far shied away from adopting this technology. The new phone is likely to hit the Chinese market in late 2012 or early 2013.

Apple sure had a great holiday season. The company sold record number of phones and other gadgets. According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, iPhone 4S helped the company in selling more iPhones than all the Android phones combined. The company shipped 37.04 million iPhones during the final quarter of the last year and retained 44.9 percent market share. Apple had almost half of this during the corresponding quarter of 2010.

In its report, Kantar Worldpanel stated, “Overall, Apple sales are now growing at a faster rate than Android across the nine countries we cover.” The report also stated that in the same quarter, Android registered marginal loss in their market share to 44.8 percent. Earlier, its market share stood at 50 percent.

But not all iPhones are created equal. iPhone 4S, despite its milder debut, now accounts for about 89 percent of all the iPhones sold. It seems like iPhone owners are not very price conscious. Despite being available for free, iPhone 3GS accounts for only 4 percent of all the iPhones sold, while iPhone 4 constituted 7 percent. According to AllThingsD, “Forty-two percent of iPhone buyers broke existing carrier contracts to get the new iPhone 4S. And 19 percent of these iPhone 4S buyers sold their old iPhone in the secondary market.” The report also said that 19 percent of iPhone 4S buyers were iPhone 4 owners, who chose to upgrade their barely a year old phone.

We love our gadgets and we just got to get the latest phone in the market, but what do you do with the one you have just tossed into your drawer. Electronic device disposal is a tricky business and something which needs to be taken seriously. And it looks like that Apple is ready to do its bit. The company already had its device recycling program running in the US and now this green initiative is all set to make its UK debut.

Apple is not well known for its social causes, but the company is now looking for a makeover. Recently, it published a responsibility report which detailed all the eco-friendly efforts made by the company. The new recycling plan will help you in getting rid of your old iPod, iPad, Macs and iPhones and will help you in making some money that way. Apple is also accepting non-functional gadgets. Though, the pricing seems to be on conservative side, but at least you can rest assured that your gadget is being disposed off in an environment-friendly way.

Depending on the condition of your product, you might be offered credit or Apple would recycle your product free of cost. According to Apple website, “Apple’s commitment to the environment includes finding the most efficient ways to reuse or recycle electronic equipment at the end of its useful life.” So go ahead, do your good deed of the day.

While market experts yet have to reach a consensus about the probable arrival date of iPad 3, but the rumors are not going to stop anytime. The latest rumors now suggest that Apple may decide to equip its next generation tablet with quad core processor. While it had already been speculated that the new iPad would come with faster processor, the use of quad core processor is a new rumor.

It is also being speculated that iPad 3 would support the use of 4G speeds. No matter how much we would like to believe this rumor, but it seems highly unlikely that iPad would get 4G speed, while iPhone is still running on 3G. Rumors also did not address the issue whether such upcoming iPad would run on 4G channels of both AT&T and Verizon or not.

Deployment of 4G is going to have many other implications as well. Though quite unlikely, but Apple may decide to provide 4G speed to tablets first, owing to their larger batteries. Bloomberg also said that iPad is better suited to meet the requirements of 4G than iPhone is.

There are already several rumors suggesting that iPad3 will have superior resolution display akin to ‘retina’ display.

We’re back with our second installment of our top tech predictions for CES 2012. In this part we will be looking at computing, tablets and mobiles. We’ll cover everything from what Microsoft has planned for Windows 8, Intel-powered Ultrabooks and everything you should expect when it comes to mobile phones and tablets.

Home Computing

Xbox 720 aside Microsoft is expected to the have more details on its new Windows 8 operating system at CES. Steve Ballmer is expected to give an opening keynote speech where he is expected to show off the tablet-friendly OS.

So far the tech world has only seen a developer preview of the new OS, with a beta expected to the ready for February – so it’s expected that Ballmer & Co will take to the stage for the last time and announce the exact date of the beta. So keep your eye’s peeled.

Other computer related news expected from Microsoft is their decision to start supporting ARM processors with Windows 8. We’re not whether they will support both desktops and tablet architecture with Arm. But, it could be that we’ll see some Windows tablets in the future with ARM processors and more traditional desktops and laptops sticking to tried and tested Intel power plants.

Intel

Intel Chief Paul Otellini is set to deliver one of the keynotes at CES, and is expected to show off some new Ivy Bridge hardware, which should be in the form of Ultrabooks, although Ivy Bridge, the follow-up to Sandy bridge, isn’t expected until later 2012.

Graphics cards-wise AMD is likely to be on hand at CES to show off their new Southern Island, 28nm graphics card, which are expect to hit retail stores by Q1 2012. Nvidia is also expected to show off their 28nm cards too, but it’s not know whether the Kepler architecture cards will be shown on the show floor or behind closed doors.

One of the main draws for many at CES will be: Ultrabooks. This is because Intel is throwing a lot of money at the manufacturers to make a line of laptops that will reinvigorate the ailing laptop market. Over the last 3 years we’ve seen an explosion of Netbooks, then Tablets and Intel now hopes the consumers will jump on board their ultra-thin Intel-powered laptops. They are essentially MacBook Air’s, but, running Windows. From what we’ve seen of Ultrabook they do make Windows laptops cool, but with a hefty price tag and increased competition from tablets they might be too expensive for hard-up consumers to stomach.

Mobile Technology

The Mobile industry tends to make its announcements at the MWC in Barcelona, but with such a competitive marketplace many companies are likely to steal a march and get some of their announcements out before the rest of the competition. Tablets will also be big business at CES, with many manufacturers making the switch from dual-core Tegra chipsets to the new Tegra quad-core chipsets.

HTC

HTC has yet to give a UK release for their Jetstream tablet – so we’re not expecting that tablet but something entirely new – known as the HTC Quattro. It’s the usual 10-inch tablet that we’ve seen so many times over the last 12 months. For us, it’s not the hardware that is keeping Google from competing with Apple, but the fragmentation of the Android OS – especially the app marketplace – which is way off the quality and reliability of Apple’s own app store.

HTC will no doubt have several mobiles on the show floor at CES, but, they tend to make their products for different markets – so many of the new handset may well be US-only for the time being. But you should expect details on the HTC Edge, HTC Ville and possibly some quad-core phones too.

Acer

Acer is expected to show off a new tablet, which will hopefully be a bit more exciting than the rather drab Iconica A500. This time around they’re hoping that the A700 might grab some positive headlines – especially as it’s thought to come with a 1080p resolution screen.

Samsung

Samsung is expected to show off the follow-up to the Galaxy S2, it’s been the at the centre of plenty rumour-mongering – so it’s highly likely that they could unveil it at CES and once again grab a decent head start over Apple and the iPhone. It’s expected to be dramatically different from the previous version as Samsung wants to move it away from the iPhone and avoid any further legal action.

LG

LG is expected to show off a new Android 4.0 mobile called the Optimus U1, which could be worth keep an eye out for, especially if they managed to get it out to retailers with Ice Cream Sandwich in toe before the competition.

Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson might use CES to the finally officially unveil the Xperia Arc HD, which has been the subject of many leaks recently. It’s expected to come with a 4.3-inch LCD display, with an impressive 1280×720 resolution, a matte finish and for the first time the Arc will have the power to match its looks. The current Arc only has a single core, which by todays standards is like a pocket calculator.

Sony will want to make a splash at CES, they are in the process of buying the mobile company outright, so a good showing at the show would allay any fears from nervous shareholders and investors.

Nokia

A couple of days back, we had heard about Majel, Google’s attempt to compete with Apple’s voice controlled personal assistant app. And now it is Microsoft’s turn to make its mark in the field. According to some reports, the company has introduced ‘Ask Ziggy’ for Windows Phone 7. Just like Siri, Ask Ziggy will be able to process voice commands. You can search for weather, flights, stock prices and other such stuff using your voice only. You can also use Ask Ziggy for running apps on WP7 phones.

The app has been developed using Nuance’s voice recognition technology. Ask Ziggy will direct you to related websites, if it is not able to find direct answers to your queries. The reports are also indicates that Ask Ziggy is currently in the evolutionary mode and has very rudimentary interface. You should note that Ask Ziggy is a third party app, which mimics Siri on WP7 platform.

Initial reviews of the app are not very encouraging. However, it is expected that the next iterations of the app would be more powerful and efficient.

The month of December brought some badly needed joy for BlackBerry. The beleaguered mobile phone company saw marginal increase in its market share in the last month of previous year. Symbian OS also increased its numbers. Surprisingly, thriving iOS and Android operating systems saw a little decline in their fortunes. Though worry not, it’s still iOS and Android’s playground.

According to a latest report released by analytics firm Net Applications, Android lost miniscule half a percent market share and now commands 16.e9 percent of the pie. However, Apple’s iOS saw its market share plummeting to 52.10 percent. In November, it had 54.04 percent market share.

On the other hand, BlackBerry increased its penetration from 3.18 percent to 3.51 percent. Symbian also gained market penetration and now has 5.76 percent share. In November, it market share stood at 3.18 percent. Java ME also touched 21.27 percent market stake to capture second spot after Apple’s iOS.

It’s never too early to start speculating about next generation iPhone. So, despite the fact that this year’s model was launched only a couple of months back, here we are bringing you the news about iPhone 5. Rumor has it that the new phone will be all rubber clad. According to BGR, an insider has revealed that the new phone will be out in Fall, 2012. The biggest scoop is that the phone will come in a considerably different form factor.

The insider has also claimed that the new phone will have some plastic or rubber parts. These parts are likely to perform the function similar to bumper cases employed by Apple. The bumper cases were used to mitigate the effect of antenna problem in original iPhone 4. BGR has reported, “In all likelihood, this material will be used as a bezel surrounding the front edge of the phone.” These parts may also used for attaching the glass screen to the back plate. The back plate is likely to be of Aluminum.

At this point of time, industry specialists are busy making assumptions about next generation iPad, which is likely to debut early next year. Some rumors are suggesting that the tablet may be launched as early as in February next, to co-incide with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ birthday.

Apple is generally in news for setting up sales records, so it is surprising when you get to hear news about decline in its sales numbers. But that’s what’s happening in Europe. According to Kantar Worldpanel Company Tech that Apple is becoming a victim of growing ‘price sensitivity’ of Europe. Barring UK, European countries like Spain, Italy and Germany are becoming increasingly price conscious and the effect is visible on Apple’s sales volume.

However, price sensitivity is not the only operative issue. iPhone 4S did not bring much new to the table, apart from its voice controlled virtual assistance software Siri. However, Siri does not support most of the European languages, thus severely limiting the appeal of the latest phone. Siri, however, does support German, French and British English.

Luckily for Apple, Europe seems to be the only region bucking the trend. The Cupertino company’s market share in the US has increased to 36 percent in the most recent quarter, up from 25 percent market share, a year earlier. Even in Britain, Apple’s market share has increased to 31 percent on year over year basis. However, in Germany, Apple now commands 22 percent market share, down from 27 percent a year earlier and in France, the company’s market share is down to 20 percent. A year earlier, Apple held 29 percent market share in France.

The report also suggests that Europe is now more inclined to buy lower priced Android handsets, instead of splashing out on premium priced Apple Phones.

According to market research firm GfK, the iPhone 4S commanded 25 percent market share in the four weeks ending on Dec 9.

However, iPhone 4S is not the only star in Apple’s crown. Its older phone models such as iPhone 4 and others are still in demand. In fact, of its five iPhone versions featured in the Top 15 smartphones list. Collectively, Apple now commands 37 percent share of the UK smartphone market, doubling its market share from February 2010.

However, Apple is not the only one rejoicing. Its competitors also saw their sales volume soaring. Beleaguered RIM also saw encouraging sales number, thanks to three different versions of BlackBerry Curve. Samsung also had good quarter with its Galaxy S II. However, Finnish company Nokia failed to find any of its phones in the Top 10 list. In November, the company had launched Lumia series phone, but failed to make a dent in the market. Nokia claimed that Lumia phones are likely to suffer from the lack of any predecessor phone.

Ofcom, regulatory body for telecommunication, also reported that smartphone penetration is increasing in the country. Ofcom said that 46 percent of the mobile phone users in UK now own a smartphone.
