CES is finally over and we thought we’d do one more round-up, which will contain the best of the rest; from new TV technologies to rival OLED, mobile phones and tablets that you may have missed during giant the tech scrum.

Acer dropped a ‘one more thing moment’ at the end of their CES keynote and it came in the form of their Iconia Tab A700 their new flagship tablet, which has Ice Cream Sandwich and a whopping quad-core processor.

It hasn’t been officially unveiled, so details about its final specs remain scant, but it was on the show floor for consumers and journalists to have a quick play.

The first thing we noticed is the amazing new screen, it boasts an impressive resolution of 1925×1200, which is just a shade above 1080p. It’s bright and pin sharp, and surely means that plenty of other tablets will make the jump to retina-esque displays in 2012….ahem Apple.

Not only does this mean 1080p playback, it also gives things like text and magazines a little more zing, and makes them look more like printed paper than digital text.

The tablet isn’t going to win a beauty contests, it’s the typical glum Acer design. It’s 9.8mm and a lot lighter than many had expected considering its power capabilities. But, if it’s not inconceivable that it could get a facelift when it finally makes it to market.

The A700 comes with Ice Cream Sandwich, 1.3Ghz quad-core tegra processor, 9,800 mAh battery, 5 megapixel camera, micro USB and microHDMI – there’s no word on price, but we’d imagine it’s going to be towards the higher end of the market.

LG may have stole the show with their amazing OLED technology, but, Sony were on hand at CES to try and steal a bit of their thunder.

They announced a new prototype screen technology called Crystal LED, which they hope will prove to the new defacto screen technology. But can it really compete with OLED ?

Sony showed off a new 55-inch panel which is made up of millions of tiny LED’s that act as pixels and offers a Full HD self-emitting display.

The method they’re using ‘dramatically improved the light and efficiency’ and offers higher contrast ratios, wider colour gamut and incredibly hight refresh rates, when compared to LCD and Plasma’s

Intriguingly, Sony added this new technology was “parallel to its continued development and commercialization of OLED displays, and Sony will work conscientiously to bring the “Crystal LED Display” to market.”

We’ve yet to find out the juicy information such as when we’ll see the technology in use or whether it will cost the earth, but Sony better get a wriggle on before Samsung and LG’s OLED TVs start to gain traction in the market.

Not only did Sony show off the new Xperia S which his the Arc HD in all but name, but they also had another handset on show the Xperia Ion.

It’s the first phone to come out of the new Sony buyout and on paper this handset is an impressive beast. Specs-wise it’s a great phone: a dual-core 1.5Ghz processor, 16 BG of internal storage and a 12 megapixel rear camera.

There’s a front-facing camera on the front capable of recording in 720p. In other exciting news the new phone comes with a massive 4.6-inch screen with an impressive resolution of 1280×720, which Sony is calling HD Reality – the handset also comes with Music unlimited and Video unlimited too.

The main selling point for the Ion is that it’s Playstation certified, meaning gaming on the go will have never looked so good on a mobile. The specs bragging doesn’t stop there though, they’ve also managed to cram in Sony’s Exmor camera technology which mean it will be up and running in 1.5 seconds and can go from pic to pic in two seconds.

The only downside we can see with the phone it’s the decision to release it with Android Gingerbread, which is a little old-hat when Ice Cream should be the only OS on sale for all future Android phone – when will Blackberry learn.

Onlive has made quite a splash with its cloud gaming apps and service, but their not content with that, they want to do the same for the desktop apps.

Much to many people’s surprise they were on hand at CES to show of their latest service, Onlive Desktop, for iPad, which will put the power of your desktop in the cloud.

The service allows iPad users (for the time being) to use Microsoft Office suite on their tablets with full touch screen capabilities all through the cloud without having to worry about whether your iPad can handle it or is compatible.

The way it works is simple: harness the power of Onlive’s goliath server farm to do all the heavy lifting at their end whilst you get the benefits of the full version of office on a tablet.

It might seem like a strange thing for Onlive to be doing, but, in theory it’s likely to be a smoother experience for the end-user because you won’t be playing triple-A games and merely doing spreadsheet work or presentations, where a tiny bit of lag wouldn’t ruin the experience.

In fact: it’s the next logical step. The servers and technology are already there and the tasks it will have to perform will be more than manageable.

Better still they’re are planning a premium version, if you signup to the top package with 50GB of server space, you can also surf the web and use their amazing bandwidth speeds and, better still, it also allows for full flash support on an iPad. Amazing.

In Onlive’s short history they’ve never had any downtime, so it’s more than plausible that businesses could actually rely on the service.

The Onlive desktop app works by downloading the app, signing up and boom – you’re away.

When the service is released on iOS this week, Onlive Desktop will be free. With this you get 2GB of storage and access to Microsoft Office. If you aren’t an iPad user, then an Android version of the service is coming soon.

With the dust settling on this year’s IFA we thought we’d run down some of the other notable pieces of tech that were on show at the Berlin’s Messe; from special TV’s, Windows Mango phones and bargain-bin tablets we’ve got you covered.

LG has always been renowned for bringing HDTV’s to the masses and they are looking to continue this trend with their latest line of 3D TV’s.

At IFA they showed of the Dual Play LW980T – the unique selling point of this set is it allows gamers to each view a full screen of their own when playing games – meaning you no longer to deal with only having half a screen for split screen gaming.

This tech has been used in cars before – as passengers will see a TV, but the driver see’s a sat-nav. Now this tech is making its way to home consoles. Quite how it’s going to work isn’t clear; whether it will need to baked into the game from the ground-up or will be backward compatible isn’t clear – but Sony is to release a PS branded version soon.

The TV is based on LG’s Cinema 3D series of televisions and apart for games-specific dual-view technology it also features full HD 2D and 3D flicker-fee image system.

Being a LG Cinema 3D TV – it also comes with 2D to 3D conversion technology. The TV supports Nano Full LED screen for substantially clearer and brighter pictures. The model feature some rather fetching looks too; with slimmer frames and measures an extremely thin 24.66mm thick.

LG has also added apps including Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and iPlayer will be available through a suite of in-bulit TV software.

This Cinema 3D TV is available in two screen sizes 47-inches and 55-inches. An interesting addition to this television is that it will come with 7 pairs of Dual Play 3D glasses.

HTC was on hand to show off a couple of handsets for Windows Phone and its mango-ready handsets Titan and Radar. Radar is aimed at the mid-range for pricing and specs. And Titan looks to be one of the top-spec phones coming to Widows Phone this year

The Radar comes with a 3.8-inch LDC screen, 1GHz processor and 8GB of internal memory. The Radar is defiantly aimed for a mid-price point and doesn’t have anything to really shout about.

But the Titan is a completely different kettle of fish. It comes with a 4.7-inch WVGA display, a unibody design, a 1.5GHz single-core Qualcomm processor, a 5.1 surround sound, an 8MP rear-facing camera with F2.2 lens, 720p video recording capabilities, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, and a 16GB of on-board memory. The HTC Titan will be available starting October 2011 in Europe.

Both handsets are expected come with optional charging docks, front-facing cameras ready to take advantage of any future Skype integration and improved rear cameras which will include wider 28mm lens’.

While the phones are definitely bring something new to the table, HTC decided not to rock the boat when it comes to the style of the phones, they’ve decided to keep with the now familiar slab design we’ve been accustomed to. Even so, the Titan looks to be a strong contender to take over the reigns of HTC’s current popular Windows Phone, the HD7.

Lenovo had a busy IFA this year the launch of their new line of Ultrabooks, but if you’re looking for something that isn’t going to break the bank it might be worth looking at their IdeaPad A1 – a $199 priced Android tablet.

The IdeaPad A1 measures 7-inches and is powered by a single-core 1Ghz cortex A8 chip, it weighs 400g and is 10 mm thick. Coated in plastic the Lenovo isn’t going to win any beauty competitions, but Lenovo claims that the internal structure is magnesium and built for durability.

Lenovo are touting a 7-hour battery life and the tab will come with 8GB on-board storage. The display is a very capable 1024×600 resolution, 3-megapixel rear camera and front-facing VGA camera.

The Lenovo will come with both microSD can full-size SD card slots for extra expansion.

The IdeaPad is the third tablet from Lenovo, but this one has major difference; it’s running Gingerbread rather than the tablet-specific Honeycomb. The inclusion of Gingerbread will no doubt be the reason why the IdeaPad is so cheap.

This Lenovo IdeaPad A1 will be available in four different colours; black, blue, pink and white. Also, on offer will be 16GB model at $249 and a 32GB at $299.

Toshiba for some stole the show for new TV’s with latest attempt a glasses-free 3D. They showed off the Toshiba ZL2 a new range of 3DTV, which boasts a quad HD display capable of rendering images at an eye-watering 3840 x 2160 resolution. Not that you’ll find any content of that resolution. Its party piece comes from its glasses-free 3D tech.

The new technology can show 3D images to 9 different viewers in one room. It does this through its face-tracking technology. Faces are tracked so that the TV can adjust images so everyone in the room can see 3D images from any angle without having to wear rather annoying 3D glasses.

The aim of face-tracking is to provide a 3-D experience no matter where the viewer is sat in the room. There are nine different optimal angles for good picture quality in the Toshiba set. The user pushes a button on the remote control, which activates the camera.

The viewer can upscale 2-D content to 3-D. As part of the conversion, the Toshiba TV offers depth control to adjust the depth to the user’s liking. The TV will be available in Germany in December with a hefty price tag of €7,999 euros, or $11,400.

The debut by Toshiba is being watched very carefully by many in the industry as the HDTV market is beginning to slow and many companies are looking for ways to increase sales and Toshiba’s new tech could be the ticket.

With this week’s debut, Toshiba has taken an early lead over rival manufacturers still struggling to make 3-D television sales show better growth. Glasses-free viewing may change the tide of disappointing sales figures, but a $11,400 they need to work on cost quickly.

Google is going to give some TLC to the UK and Europe in the form of Google TV. The company chairman Eric Schmidt today confirmed that Google TV would be hitting European and UK market early next year. He was speaking at Edinburgh International Television Festival.

After spending good one hour on ripping current television industry apart, Schmidt said that Google TV is resolutely going to stay away from creating its own content. In his words, “We are under no illusions that we can create content. We are good at creating platforms. We’re no good at content.”

Essentially, Google TV is yet another stab at merging internet and TV. So far, many companies have attempted this feat, but none has been able to score a decisive victory. The venture is still a ‘work in progress’ and Google TV is no different. Though it was launched almost a year back in the US but it has failed to meet its targets or to create any ripples in the Internet TV segment. For Google’s good, we hope things will be a little different on this side of the pond.

We had recently noted that Google has now decided to create Android apps centered on Google TV. Schmidt remained mum about the pricing in the UK, but in the US, Google TV compatible Logitech TV Set up box is currently retailing at $99, down from its initial price of $249. Google TV has received poor response from consumers and tech experts, but it is continually evolving. So let’s just hope it will in considerably better position by the time it reaches our shores.

It’s been rumoured several times that Apple might be considering putting their Apple TV directly into a monitor and analyst’s reckon it could happen next year. It’s thought that Apple is considering a new line in TV’s after a rather slow take up of their Apple TV set top box.

Global Equities Research’s Tip Chowdry suggests that Apple will not only get into the TV market, but will launch three different sized sets in March Next year.

Each one apparently will come with a mind boggling amount of speakers – 16. Which will mean the sets have near-surround sound audio.

You will be able to connect the sets to both Macs and iDevices via a cable or wirelessly via Apple Airplay. It would mean that the TV’s would be similar to Apple’s Cinema display – but with more bells and whistles.

The real reason for Apple getting into TV’s would be so they can put iTunes baked into the sets from the ground up, so that users could rent movies, buy TV shows and listen to music. Chowdry says the sets will most comparable to Bose’s VideoWave web and media TV.

With the success of Apple iDevice ecosystem they have devised an established and robust manufacturing and distribution system with Foxconn.

So, Apple could easily move into large HD display manufacturing with minimal risk and a high degrees of production quality.

It’s is thought that LG would make the sets for Apple so the cupertino company wouldn’t have to bear the burden of developing the components itself.

An iOS display would create an entirely new revenue stream as its own native app platform, in the same way that native iPad apps have.

Presumably, data and purchases could be shared across the iOS ecosystem, allowing users to access media they’ve rented or purchased anytime, anywhere. A picturesque scenario would be an iTunes movie rental that begins on the Apple HDTV and can be seamlessly continued on the go on an iPad or other iOS device.

We agree, there just isn’t enough 3D content around to tempt cash-strapped consumers. But where 3D has a chance to shine isn’t so much film or documentary, but sport. Everybody knows the UK loves a good bit of sport. As Sky proved last year with the Champions League watching the action in 3D is a very tempting prospect which takes the visual experience of being a spectator to the next level.

As we all get excited about the 2012 Olympics, one of the biggest sporting events on the calendar is unfolding as I type this article; and thanks to Sony it’s unfolding in 3D. But what event am I talking about?

Wimbeldon of course. Even people who don’t like tennis like tennis when it comes to Wimbledon. Of copious amounts of Pimms is enough to get anyone excited.

Continuing their push to get 3D into the eye of the public Sony is the official 3D partner of Wimbledon. This means they are broadcasting matches in 3D, imagine a tennis ball coming at your face 100mph, pretty scary? Agreed but once you get used to it, it’s amazing, enough to persuade anyone to take the jump to 3D.

And that’s not all! Sony are also offering you the chance to WIN VIP tickets to the Wimbledon Women’s Finals (as well as other prizes)

For your chance to win join the tennis ball hunt and receive an entry into a prize draw for every one you catch. Check out the video for more info:

Sky in particular did some stunning work with 3D, offering Champions League football in the third dimension as well as some cool nature documentaries. But it will take much more work for the general public to accept the technology with open arms. As I’ve said before, many people don’t have HD yet, a new TV is just not an affordable object in this financial climate.

Informa Telecoms and Media senior analyst Adam Thomas has said that: “Public reaction has been mixed – due to both a lack of content and a simple failure of the public to engage with what is, essentially, a new type of viewing experience.”
According to the Informa Telecoms and Media report, it will take until 2016 for 3D to hit it big. By then there should be around 11 million households with a 3DTV, however the forecast predicts that less than half will actually watch 3D programming compared to the 90% of current 3D TV owners who are regular 3D program viewers.

Maybe even 2016 is too earlier. The problem is a catch-22 where consumers are put off due to the lack of 3D content and television networks are reluctant to invest in 3D programming because there isn’t enough consumer interest. But then, things move fast in the tech world and the solution could be simple.

3D’s not exactly mainstream yet, I’m one of the many still stuck in the stone-age who hasn’t even forked out for HD yet. But those of us who want 3D, want the best but the problem is, a conventional 3D TV and a couple of pairs of cheap 3D glasses isn’t going to give you the same experience you got watching Avatar at a 3D cinema. But that’s conventional 3D. One of the leading names in 3D consumer electronics; LG has transferred the magic of the movies from the theatre to the humble living room.

A standard 3D TV constricts your view with a slim angle, but with LG’s new smart TV you can have your front-room as crowded as you like (watch the video for visual proof of how many people you can cram in.) No need to squint, no need to miss out on any of the action.

And here’s the important thing, the glasses. A 3D TV can perfect but if the glasses that accompany it are expensive, clumpy and horrendously battery hungry, then the whole experience is ruined. 3D glasses should be fun not irritating. In fact you shouldn’t even notice that you’re wearing them.

LG have tackled the problem of the poor working glasses by crafting cinema quality glasses for their new Cinema 3D Smart TV.

They bring the next level of the 3D to those lucky enough to afford it. Check out the video below to see the Smart TV in all its glory; kicking the a*** of a meagre ‘conventional 3D TV.’

Sony’s Live Production head honcho Malcolm Robinson believes that BBC is technically capable of broadcasting Wimbledon finals in 3D over its HD channel. Sony has been entrusted with the responsibility of shooting Wimbledon in 3D format. However, this time over, only the last three days of the championship will be recorded in three dimensional glory. Sony is using stereoscopic format for 3D recording. This is the same format which is used by Sky for its 3D services.

Sony sounds pretty excited about this but BBC is keeping low profile and refused to comment on Sony’s offhand remark. While BBC may eventually venture into 3D territory, but it does not seem ready for the upcoming event. BBC was also offered to do 3D broadcast of World Cup and Royal Wedding but it declined. Anyways, Sony is all prepared for the event and it won’t be the first one for the electronics company. Sony has already used its technology for capturing World Cup in 3D. In order to boost its 3D portfolio, the company had recently acquired HawkEye Technology.

BBC, on the other hand, is still mulling the relative value proposition for broadcasting the tournament in HD or 3D. A corporation executive pointed out that while 8 million households in the UK are HD ready, the number of 3D equipped houses is still below 200,000. Danielle Nagler of BBC also said that 3D is still not mainstream. This means that corporation may have tough time justifying its decision to broadcast in 3D. So in nutshell, if you are looking to watch the tournament in 3D, your only bet is to actually buy the ticket and sit in the stadium. Going by BBC’s assertion, it does not look like it would be broadcasting the tournament in 3D, at least not this year.

Like anything else that can be used to spice up the old smut, the porn industry is of course taking its slice of the action.

Penthouse has announced the launch of a 3D TV service described as “the first Pan European 3D formatted adult channel”

Penthouse 3D will be putting out vastly educational dramas about human relationships and sexuality as of today between 22:00 GMT and 04:00 GMT.

Penthouse owner Marc Bell said we are very excited about the launch of the Penthouse 3D channel. Our goal is always to deliver the latest technology on the world’s best platform.”

Don’t worry our America friends, Penthouse will be launching 3D porn in the US in the second quarter of this year, but rather worryingly they decided us European viewers just couldn’t wait…

So this year, apart from iPad 2, we are expecting a massive wave of Android tablets to hit the market. The latest entrant is LG G-Slate Android Honeycomb tablet. T-Mobile has released the full specs of the tablet for us to devour. The tablet is on the smaller side with an 8.9 inch HD screen and is capable of displaying 3D contents, although, you will have to use 3D glasses for having that fun. Consider yourself warned.

The tablet’s duel stereoscopic cameras are equipped to capture 3D videos in full HD quality of 1080p. Its rear facing camera is good 5MP whereas front facing camera comes with 2MP resolution. Under the hood, the tablet has got NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and has on-board storage capacity of 32GB. Apart from this, the tablet has HSPA+ connectivity, HDMI out, Gyroscope and an accelerometer. The tablet is also capable of displaying videos at 720p resolution.
