We love our Spotify, so much that we do not mind tinkering with it to make it more likeable. With tons of music to play, no wonder you would want its music discovery option to be a bit more robust. However, that’s where we can use some outside help in the form of ShareMyPlaylist, which is a new playlist sharing app.

True to its name, ShareMyPlaylist helps you in sharing your playlist, thus helping you and your friends in discovering new music. But at the very same time, it can also generate new playlists revolving around your favorite bands. Basically, this app culls the music from bands you listen to most, and we are pretty sure that most of us manage to miss a few gems from our favorite music groups. So this app is a great way to find some long forgotten or hidden gems.

The app is pretty intuitive and easy to use. All you have to do is to input the names of a couple of your favorite bands and let the app do the legwork. However, you have the option of customizing the playlist as you can select the number of tracks to be included in the playlist. You can go for a mini playlist with 10 tracks or a full-fledged one with 25 songs. What else, you can also select if you want your playlist to be populated with popular songs or the obscure ones, which is a great way to add to your hipster cred.

The app is available for Android and iOS platforms and you would need a premium Spotify account to listen to these playlists.

UK Police recently claimed to arrest one of the top minds of hacking group LulzSec. Apparently, Police nabbed a 19 year old, who was operating under online moniker of “Topiary”. Topiary was considered to be among the top brass of the hacking group and was also believed to be involved in the hacking of financial firm HBGary. He was also accused to arranging funds for the group’s hacking endeavors. So, when Scotland Yard agents took him down, it looked like a big victory for the law enforcement agency. However, the euphoria was short-lived.

However, now it looks like that the Police has got a wrong person on its hands and that the arrested person is not after all related to LulzSec. There is a chat transcripts doing rounds on the internet which suggests that the real Topiary is still at large. It also seems like that the real Topiary is actually a 23 year old living in Sweden. But, the authenticity of chat transcripts is also questionable, which further complicates the matter.

Police seems to be at loss when it comes to tackling new age cybercriminals. The ineptness of the enforcement agencies is at full display in this latest case. We just hope that Police gets to nab real offenders soon, but in the meantime, Topiary is just going to be added to the growing list of wrong guys who got nabbed by Police.

Year 2011 had been pretty tough for Android and iOS so far. Both the platforms attracted plenty of attention, well, the wrong type of attention as they had to endure malware and virus attacks. Though, both the operating systems managed to escape relatively unscathed but it did raise the questions about their security. However, as a nod of approval, both the operating systems have been declared safer that Microsoft’s Windows.

In a report issued by Symantec, iOS has been crowned as the most secure operating system. The main factor behind the stellar performance is that Apple screens its apps for security threats, which leads to lesser incidents of security malfunctioning.

Android, on the other hand, has a comparatively lax screening process for its apps and its effects considerably reduce the robustness of the OS. Another problem faced by Android is the device fragmentation, which is a natural byproduct of the open nature of the operating system. This also means that a large number of devices are not running the updated version of the operating system and hence, are not fully protected against threats.

Recent attacks on Android and iOS have also raised question whether these operating systems are inherently more secure or do they just lack the critical user base to make them attractive enough target for hackers. It may well be the combination of both the factors. But as the report indicates, Apple does retain proper control over its platform, thereby making it much more secure than Windows. Microsoft can probably learn a lesson or two from Apple.

LulzSec, a hacking group, which rose to infamy, thanks to its various breaching attempts which showed how vulnerable our major companies and government websites are, has announced that it will be disbanding itself. In the recent past, the group had been responsible for attacks on the CIA and Sony Corp. websites. In its parting notes, the group said that it has accomplished its aim of disrupting the status quo “for entertainment”. Oh well, “the entertainment” proved to be very expensive for the victims. Ask Sony Corp.!

Though, the wannabe pirates are claiming that they are disbanding as they have accomplished their goals. But the things are not that simple. Cyberworld may seem like a robotic place but it is still populated and governed by human beings and their amorphous instincts. Recently, there had been rumors that LulzSec not only messed up with corporations and governments, but also managed to sour its relationship with other underground hacking groups. One competing hacking group even went ahead and published the names of LulzSec members.

Apart from this, the government also revved up its quest against the group and arrested a 19 year old, suspected to be the mastermind behind the group. With some high profile heists, the group is already a target of envy from its rival gangs. However, some of the hacking groups have also alleged that LulzSec lacks direction and thus is going haywire.

While there are not many people empathizing with the hacking group and we are pretty sure not many tears would be shed at the news of its demise, but the group at least showed the loopholes in internet and online security. Now, that every company and their grandma is jumping on the Cloud Computing bandwagon, the issue becomes even more important.

LulzSec had been making some major news stories over this past month. However, it seems like that the big brothers are getting annoyed by the tantrums of these pesky teenagers and have decided to go all strict on them. Apparently, Metropolitan Police of London today arrested a 19 year old, who is suspected to be the mastermind behind all the hacking attacks on big businesses and government agencies.

LulzSec made the headlines when it was held responsible for the massive security breach at Sony PlayStation Network. The breach caused the network to be disrupted for more than a month and cost the company to the tune of a couple of hundred million dollars. The network users’ personal and financial details were compromised. However, there are no reports that the data was actually used for causing any financial damage.

The group later also executed the similar attacks on CIA website as well. Reportedly, LulzSec worked in cahoots with yet another famous hacking group Anonymous. Anonymous stole the limelight when it came forward to defend Wikileaks and its founder Julian Assange.

Though newspapers and news sites are flushed with reports about the arrest of Ryan Cleary, the group has claimed that none of its members has been detained by the Police. Clearly in a defiant mode, the group tweeted, “Seems the glorious leader of LulzSec got arrested, it’s all over now… wait… we’re all still here! Which poor b****** did they take down?” Uh-huh, the arrest was made by the London Police in collaboration with the FBI and the Scotland Yard, so we are pretty sure that we can easily rule out the comic possibility of mistaken identity. By the way, LulzSec has also denied being responsible for Census database hack.

We all had a friend’s friend with a hot blonde ‘online friend’ and well, needless to say that more often than not that hot blonde turned out to be a some dude with a bear gut and too much of free time. However, the latest ‘A Gay Girl in Damascus’ has an uglier side, as its creator did not dupe just one or two people, but the entire blog community. Not only that, it also endangered the sovereignty of a nation.

It all started with Amina Arraf, a Syrian-American woman, who claimed to be gay. The blog was started in February this year and soon had an enviable fan-following, which was not exactly a surprise. After all, it had all the ingredients of a pot-boiler, a young fiesty woman from a ‘repressed’ society which does not accept her sexuality, juicy tit-bits about a culture which we do not know much about and the general drama.

The blog contained the ‘truth’ about the ground situation in Syria and things were going pretty well, until Amina’s cousin Rania Ismail appeared on the scene and claimed that Amina has been abducted/arrested by Syrian authority. Well, one thing led to another and within a week, it was discovered that the ‘Gay Girl in Damascus’ is nothing more than a figment of imagination of a 40-year US student living in Scotland.

Tom MacMaster, the Gay Girl in Damascus, claimed that he “never expected this level of attention’ and said that he was sorry. A self-proclaimed Middle-East activist, however, still had the chutzpah to claim that “While the narrative voice may have been fictional, the facts on this blog are true and not misleading as to the situation on the ground.” Now, that’s taking the sense of megalomania to a whole new level. It really takes nerves to be an American living in Scotland and then claim to have a handle of the “situation on the ground” of a complex society and closed regime.

MacMaster, also claimed that he created the character out of ‘Vanity’, but it would be unfair to cast aspersions on the MacMaster alone. How about the ‘vanity’ of the blog-followers, who blindly believed everything and even went ahead and created “Free Amina Abdullah” Facebook group.

News channel lost their credibility a long time ago, thanks to political and corporate affiliations. In such times, internet journalism came as a fresh breath of air. However, with such incidents, where an insignificant individual is able to mould the public view without any sort of accountability, shows that internet is capable of becoming a monster on its own. Keep watching this space to know the fate of MacMaster.

After the Lulz boat kicked up a storm at Sony and the NHS, someone somewhere has took things a step further, giving the global economy a wobble after aiming a cyber attack at the International Monetary Fund. In a separate incident game developers Codemasters have also been hit in a major attack which is said to have compromised tens of thousands of personal accounts.

Whoever hit Codemasters will be kicking themselves; what should be major news will most likely be overshadowed by the IMF attack which was severe enough for the economic development agency to temporarily suspend network connections with the World Bank. In other words, for a little time, the entire world economy ground to a halt.

Leaked internal emails from the IMF describe “suspicious file transfers.” And a “subsequent investigation which established that a Fund desktop computer had been compromised and used to access some Fund systems.” The emails also stated that there is “no reason to believe that any personal information was sought for fraud purposes.”

Something needs to be done ASAP before a couple of frustrated nerds in knitted jumpers destroy the world with a laptop. But how do we stop the hackers? David Beesley, managing director of security consultancy Network Defence said that “Spear phishing [the type of attack thought to be used in the IMF incident] is difficult to defend against because it primarily targets users not PCs, and the information that attackers can gather from social networking sites makes the phishing emails look very convincing. As we’ve seen, it makes these attacks effective against any size of organisation.”

According to Beesley,“Firms need to use a mix of user education and layered security solutions to defend themselves. Employees should be aware that even plausible-looking emails should be treated with suspicion, and IT teams should look at their AV and anti-spam solutions to try and stop malware propagating.”

If you are not careful enough, you might find it the hard way. The arrest of an Orange County, US technician came as a rude shock for some of his clients. The technician allegedly installed spyware on his clients’ Macs. The spyware then took control of the Mac webcams, which let the technician photograph his clients in compromising situations.

Though, we have plenty of sympathy for the victims, but apparently the spyware flashed fake error messages such as “try putting your laptop near hot steam for several minutes to clean the sensor.” This message led many of his victims to actually take their laptops with them to their shower. So, if you have recently got your laptop serviced and are now coming across such messages, then please, do not act on them.

The accused used a program called “Camcapture”, which he controlled via his cellphone and kept the photos on a remote server. The police claimed that it has found thousands of photographs and videos on the technician’s computer.

Advanced technology has certainly changed our lives but we are paying big cost for it too. Recent hack attacks have proved this. Even, the companies with the highest level of expertise cannot ensure that your private information is safe with them. Though, no pecuniary loss occurred during the recent PSN hack, but now Citibank too has come forward and claimed that its data has been compromised. So, whether it is your bank details, you credit card number or your modesty, if you want to retain your privacy while still enjoying the fruits of hi-tech, then you better remain on guard.

Sony’s problems with its networks do not seem to be abating and the users are becoming more and more wary of the security steps taken by the companies. And now the gaming giant Nintendo Co. has announced that its US website has been hacked. Though, the company stressed that no customer or company information has been compromised but the mere fact that its network has been breached is enough to send a shiver down the spine.

Though, Nintendo is trying to downplay the incident claiming it to be very minor in comparison to PSN security breach. Lulzsec, the group behind Sony outage has claimed the responsibility for Nintendo hacking as well. The hacking group also posted some data online. The data is basically a “server configuration file” taken from the company servers.

Nintendo is not the only victim. Hackers, apparently breached FBI partner websites as well. Sony, which is still struggling with getting its network on its feet again, suffered yet another blow. The company’s website was targeted again, this time by a Lebanese hacker group, which was responsible for breaching Sony Ericsson website recently. Sony refused to confirm the rumors.

Nintendo had recently launched a new online store for its 3DS hand-held gaming device. This store will sell exclusive 3D games for the console. It will also stock some older games which have been recast in 3D mode. The store is expected to go online from Tuesday in the US and Japan. With the latest breach, consumers would be justified in being reluctant to provide confidential financial data to the company.

LulzSec, a hacker group, claimed that it has breached Sony Pictures website and the meantime over 1 million accounts were compromised. Sony just does not seem to be catching a break. The company had finally succeeded in getting its PlayStation Network on its wobbly feet and now it has one new problem to worry about. We are more concerned about the beating Sony’s reputation has taken after all these high profile breaches than its monetary implications. PlayStation Network fiasco is already expected to cost some $171 million to the company.

The most damning statement that LulzSec posted was about security measure taken by Sony for protecting its users’ data. The group claimed, “Sony stored over 1,000,000 passwords of its customers in plaintext, which means it’s just a matter of taking it.This is disgraceful and insecure; they were asking for it.” And you would think that Sony would have learnt its lessons from PSN failure. Sony’s frigid response so far had been that it is “looking into” the issue.

LulzSec is the same group which claimed to hack PBS’s website. The hacking group claimed that it was able to retrieve administrative information from Sony Picture’s website and could have gathered all the information it had accessed. And if you are going to dismiss the claim as mere fear-mongering tactics, then you should believe AP which tested the information revealed and found that the claims are actually true.

However, Sony is not the only company which is facing these issues. Google also recently reported the hacking of Gmail accounts, though, the company blamed China for the breach. Defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. also fell to the tactics of hacking groups.

LulzSec claimed that it did not hack the site for personal glory but for “embarrassing” the multinational company. Well, we would just say that these hacking groups need to cut some slack to Sony, as the company has already suffered a massive blow to its reputation.
