We’ve just caught-wind that the Nokia boffins are working on a 12-megapixel monster-snapper handet with optical, rather than digital, zoom.

If the report at RegHardware.co.uk is correct then the Finnish giant will be getting world renowned optics firm Carl Zeiss on board to ensure a high quality end product.

Other specs are currently non-existent, but if the rumour is to be believed we could be seeing this sure-fire king of the cameraphones before the year is over, failing this, at the start of next year.

We’re certainly excited by the prospect of such a highly-specified cameraphone. Do we need it? No, but boy do we want it.

We think the handset will hit the market in the midst of the 12-megapixel showdown with handsets from Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson due to hit the market in the next 9 months.

Electronics manufacturer ASUS has announced that it will be launching a G60 gaming laptop with a backlit keyboard.

Naturally, as the laptop is being marketed as a gaming machine it will come with an impressive specs list that includes:

16-inch 1080p display

Intel Core 2 Quad processor

4GB DDR3 RAM

GeForce GTX 260M graphics – with 1GB RAM

Blu-Ray drive

2-megapixel webcam

The G60 will come with a SSD drive as standard, and customers will have a choice of capacities ranging from 320GB to 1TB.

Connectivity-wise the G60 has got most of the bases covered too, with SATA, HDMI and Firewire options to keep the gaming punters happy.

The device comes branded as a ‘Republic of Gamers’ machine to set it apart from the rest of the ASUS range, and also includes a rather nice backlit keyboard.

Of course, with these specs it was never going to come in as the cheapest laptop in the world, so we’re not too surprised to hear that it will cost £1500 when it launches here in September – if anything, we’re surprised that the price is as low as that.

According to a BBC news report, webmail services such as Google Mail are being quizzed on how safe the web-based session system really is for transient visitors.

In an open letter from concerned privacy advocates, lawyers and security experts Google has been asked why it doesn’t implement secure HTTP for all of its mail service.

The secure HTTP connection, known as HTTPS, is used for logging in and out of the service, but once inside it reverts back to the standard HTTP unencrypted connection.

Experts fear that with the increase in cloud computing and desire to be online wherever we go using internet cafés and WiFi hotspots will leave users of Google Mail, along with other webmail services, open to a “middle-man” attack that involves the interception and spoofing of authenticated session browsing cookies and could provide the intruder with full account access.

In response, “we’re planning a trial in which we’ll move small samples of different types of GMail users to HTTPS to see what their experience is, and whether it affects the performance of their e-mail,” said Google.

To be fair, if your security conscious (read: healthily paranoid) you can enable HTTPS for the whole of your Google Mail, Calendars and Documents by going into Settings>General>Browser Connection>Always use HTTPS.

The issue here clearly isn’t the option being available, it’s about the option becoming the norm given that most of the 113million GMail users probably won’t even know that their email sessions have been unsecured thus far, let alone actually hunt out the setting themselves to rectify it.

A report has been published today revealing that Parcel Force customer’s personal details have been at risk of exposure online.

The details came courtesy of the BBC website who revealed that a fault in the parcel tracking system on the Parcel Force site, left customer’s names, addresses and signatures – in some cases revealing details of parcels yet to clear customs.

Parcel Force apologised for the fault saying, “”we can confirm that the fault was rectified and the service restored on Thursday night. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”

That might not be enough for the Information Commissioners Office though, who oversee businesses handling of personal information, “We will be contacting Parcel Force to establish how this security breach occurred and to find out what steps it will be taking to ensure that such a breach cannot happen again”, said a company spokesperson.

The flaw occurred when customers entered specific parcel codes into the Parcel Force tracking system to find their whereabouts. Reportedly, the system delivered multiple wrong results causing distress amongst customers that thought their packages had gone awry, and in some cases revealing details of parcels that had already been delivered.

With an aim of being the UK’s “most trusted” parcel carrier, it’s undoubtedly an embarrassment that the recently profitable courier company could do without.

iPhone owners woke up to a stern warning from UK network operator O2 this morning, with warnings that unofficial iPhone tethering will result in a fine or disconnection from the carrier.

The statement came after one site offered a file to download to the handset that enabled tethering without using O2′s tethering bolt-on plan.

“Internet rumours suggest that some customers have modified their iPhone to enable Internet Tethering without the purchase of the Internet Tethering Bolt On. Any use of this particular feature without the purchase of the Bolt on is specifically prohibited under our terms of service.”

It seems fair enough that O2 is less than pleased about its users circumventing the chargeable service to use the iPhone as a modem, but many commentators are complaining that if the bolt-on wasn’t so expensive in the first place then find a way around it wouldn’t be necessary.

The main bone of contention seems to be the charges for the 3GB or 10GB of tethering data that are priced at £14.68 and £29.36 per month respectively – understandably irksome for a contract that includes “unlimited data”.

Quite how O2 will be able to tell the difference between tethered data usage and non-tethered is unclear, although presumably the basis for it will be pure usage amounts.

For those of you interested in taking the condoned tethering route the new data plans will be on sale from tomorrow.

If you remember a few weeks ago we wrote about Firefox’s protestations at Internet Explorer continuing to come bundled with Windows 7 and the ongoing anti-trust investigation looking into whether the practice is uncompetitive.

Well the results aren’t yet in, but according to a statement over at the Telegraph, Microsoft has decided to remove Internet Explorer from Windows 7 for it’s European launch.

“Given the pending legal proceeding, we’ve decided that instead of including Internet Explorer in Windows 7 in Europe, we will offer it separately and on an easy-to-install basis to both computer manufacturers and users”, said Dave Heiner, deputy general counsel for Microsoft.

Microsoft maintains that its customers will be free to install IE or any browser of their choosing, it also stressed that its customers have always had the choice of installing alternate browsers – which is a somewhat moot point given that the massive majority of those users would be using IE by default, even to find a new browser.

Whilst you’d imagine that the EU regulators and Microsoft rivals would be pleased to hear this news, it seems that Redmond can’t please anybody; with the regulators and an Opera spokesperson bemoaning that removal of the browser is actually providing the customer with less choice, and goes little way to restoring the notion of competition in the browser market share wars.

The kind folks at Dell are offering free return flights to the US or Europe for punters willing to pony up the requisite cash for an Inspiron 15 or Studio 15 laptop, now isn’t that generous.

Naturally there are a couple of stipulations, such as flights to the US can only depart from Gatwick or Heathrow and only go to New York, Washington DC or Boston. Those of you interested in taking the Euro route have the option of Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, Milan, Madrid, Paris, Dublin, Lisbon, Oslo and Krakow.

The European option adds a few more departure airports to the list too, you can get the full skinny over on the official Dell UK page.

So, what’s this free flight going to cost you?

Well, if you’re in the market for a new laptop anyway then this seems like a pretty good deal; the Inspiron 15 starts from just £499 and the unmodified model comes with a T6400 Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM and a 320GB hard drive.

Or if you’re looking for something with a bit more pizazz, the new Studio 15 might be more your speed. The base on this starts from £599; and for your hard earned cash you get the same 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor as the Inspiron, 4GB RAM, a 500GB hard drive and a 2-megapixel integrated webcam.

What are you waiting for?

We’ve just heard confirmation of the rumours that the next Apple OS, Snow Leopard, will run only on Intel-based machines.

The posting popped over on the official Apple Mac OSX homepage and has confirmed that if you want to run the latest iteration, then an Intel processor is a must.

The OS isn’t set for general release until September of this year, when it will be available to download at-large. That isn’t the only way to get your hands on 10.6 though, with it coming pre-installed on every post-release date Mac; or available for a $9.95 upgrade fee if you picked up a qualifying Mac on or after the 8th June.

The decision to run Snow Leopard only on Intel-based hardware is one that now sees PowerPC based machines out in the cold somewhat, although the transition is no surprise, with machines of the last few years all shipping with Intel hardware.

Apple is claiming that the new OS will be “faster, more reliable and easier to use” in an update that breaks tradition for Apple and introduces more stabilisation updates than actual new features.

It might be a tough sell to get users to upgrade to the new OS for the full standalone price, particularly given that the majority of the update has been focused toward refining rather than reinventing.

We’ll keep you posted on any other announcements as we approach the September launch date.

Whilst there was a whole bunch of excitement going down at E3, one of the things we’d hoped to hear from Sony was that it would be bringing the PS3 in at a lower-price point to encourage new uptake. Unfortunately our hopes seem to have been dashed against the cruel rocks of reality, but all may not be lost.

According to a report over at IndustryGamers hope may be on the horizon for those of you waiting for the PS3 to drop its not inconsiderable price-tag.

Analyst Arvind Bhatia of Sterne Agee remarked in a note that ““industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August”, and whilst that’s not official confirmation of any kind, it’s nice to hear rumours that the big S could become a bit more pocket-friendly.

If accurate, the drop would tie-in nicely with the release of the next Madden 2010 iteration in mid-August and “the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be positive for the industry”, commented Bhatia.

If the price-drop does happen, we may well see the other big rivals following suit to make their own offerings more competitive, which is naturally positive for the consumers.

A new report has revealed that the Big S is winning the battle for the hearts and minds of teen gamers ahead of Microsoft and Nintendo.

The research was carried out by Global Habbo Youth Survey, who quizzed more than 100,000 “teens” aged between 11 and 19.

In global terms the most voted for gaming device was Sony’s PSP, but perhaps given the demographic of those questioned, the result of a small, portable and relatively cheap gaming machine winning shouldn’t be all that surprising.

That said, even in the full-size console category the PS3 still managed to scoop the global plaudits, with Nintendo in second and the Microsoft trailing in third.

It seems that Sony really wiped the board with this research, scooping as they did the top spot across no less than 3 categories; the third being consumer electronics, with Apple nipping at its heals in second position.

Perhaps the most surprising results from this research published on ITProPortal is that on the global scale, Apple didn’t figure in the top 2 spots for the mobile phone category, with Nokia retaining its lead from last year, and Sony Ericsson a close second.
