7 Deadly Sins

Microsoft has been busy since the release of the Windows 7 beta build 7000. In fact, they have got to at least build 7025. And, as much as Windows 7 is shaping up to be an attractive prospect, a leaked screenshot betrayed some of the good work Microsoft has done.

And it has now been confirmed, the various versions, that were considered bad form on Vista, have made it back for a second time. The pattern of features are very similar to Vista, and the versions are:

So what’s wrong with Microsoft’s approach? Well, where do I start? If you have clicked the link above, then my first point is simply that people are mislead by the marketing. People bought laptops in good faith, expecting glassy windows and flip 3D. What they got was a computer barely able to run the Vista bloat, and with none of the “features”.

Secondly, Why? What possible use is it to me to have an OS that does not perform all the tasks it is capable of? Mac users can feel smug here, as the latest version of OS X has one version. Users get all of the features for one price.

I think it’s fair to say that Windows could get away with two versions. One for the home containing the media centre, the games, and all that fun stuff. And a version for the business that can join domains. And that is it. I find it strange that Microsoft are going to repeat this mistake. Heaven only knows what the thinking is behind this.
