Google Proposes to Provide Internet Access to 3 Billion People

Google as well as Liberty Global and HSBC are working together with O3b Networks, to try and offer internet access by 2010 to the ‘other 3 billion’ people who lack it today.

The proposal has already been put into motion where 16 low-cost satellites are being produced to work together to offer the Internet building blocks to places which lack high-speed networking cables.

The areas that will benefit from this initiative include Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The view is that satellites will link to ground stations such WiMax station (placed on the ground) to reach the consumers.

O3B’s aim is to offer local companies the chance to deliver internet and mobile services to remote areas which require high speed access but have no means to obtain this type of service.
